    The other crow-sized birds with black and white on the wings around there are lapwings. I've mistaken them for raptors on brief views loads of times and they're very common along the A66 at this time of year.

    I agree this is a house sparrow. I live in an area with lots of tree sparrows and I always think their call sounds like two smallish stones banging together. Not sure if that helps but it's very distinctive call once you get used to it. Not that much like house sparrow at all.
