    Provence - Winter

Eagle Owls are still near Les Baux, though they're difficult in dodgy weather. Citril Finch are occasionally found around Les Baux and at La Caume (Bonelli's site) though we only saw them on Mont Ventoux this year (on the road close to Chalet Reynard). Can't really help with the other species...

    Gull-billed Tern

I think you're correct on the first one, but the second photo looks like a Black Tern (if that carpal bar is not a photo artefact).

    Les Baux - wallcreepers?

Shame about the Wallcreepers, but they can take a bit of time as there is a lot of rock to search! As you say, an excuse to return, and maybe to look for Citril Finch and Eagle Owls as well. Nice to hear that you saw a good number of Bustards though. Cheers James

    Les Baux - wallcreepers?

Meropes In case you don't know, there is a path that runs round the southern side of Les Baux, beneath the town walls and cliffs that is a good place to look for wallcreeper (and blue rock thrush). Alpine Accentor can be found in the town itself. Good luck James

    Les Baux - wallcreepers?

Hi Rosbifs I'm heading to the area in December. Where abouts around Istres is it best to go for the bustards and sandgrouse? Would be amazing to see those kind of numbers (and great to hear that there are such large numbers). Thanks for any help you can give. James

    redstart or balck redstart.

The first attached photo is a male Common Redstart - white supercillium. Second photo looks like male Common too, but would like to see back and head out of shadow to rule out semirufus Black Redstart (though black probably doesn't go down far enough on chest - been a while since I've seen one...

    Pecs

I'm going to be visiting Pecs in the middle of March and was wondering if anyone knows of any good sites round there that they could let me know about? Thanks very much James

    Birds in Kenya - December

Imm oxpecker - looks like it has a pale rump so yellow-billed Dove - maybe emerald-spotted Juv sparrow - could be northern grey-headed? Agree with mocking cliff-chat and pale flycatcher. The last photo looks like Northern Grey-headed Sparrow. And sorry, I'm ignoring the weavers for now!

    Duck, Scotland

Yes, looks like an male Eider.

    Long-tailed Hawk, Ghana

I have attached a freeze-frame photo from a video I took of a Long-tailed Hawk that I saw in Ghana back in December 2011. The bird was attracted in by our guide playing a recording of its call. Whilst I have seen Grey Herons sunning themselves like this, the barring on the undertail and...

Woodpecker Sweetwater Reserve Kenya Dec 2011

I'm not sure they're that rare, but it's definitely a Bearded Woodpecker.

    Dubrovnik, Croatia August 2011

You've put me to shame. I was there in early July and due to spending all my time on the beach or in bars only saw lots of Alpine Swifts (which were spectacular)!

    Namibia bird identification

Yes Nick, you're right, should have written Common Fiscal. Cheers James

    Namibia bird identification

I agree - Fiscal Shrike (subcoronatus). White eyebrow can be confusing if you're used to the Fiscals in SA.

    American Wigeon at Oued Massa

Just got back from Morocco so a bit of a delay on this news. A female American Wigeon was at Oued Massa on Saturday 19th March. It was on the river seen from one of the bridges that cross it, a few km upstream from the park (one of the areas for Plain Martin). Cheers James

    2 ID's - Tanzania (East African Birds)

Probably Black-throated Wattle-eye and definitely Spectacled Weaver (thin bill and pale iris). You've been taking some nice photos!
