    Colorado (sharp-shinned?) hawk with black and white breast

    I thought it was a sharp-shinned hawk because of the shape of it's tail. I think a cooper's hawk has a more rounded tail. I really thought I was looking at the front, maybe because the head was turned so completely. Again, sorry about the blurry image.

    Thanks to all who responded. I do not think it's a goldfinch. Could be a tree sparrow. I had one other photo, but it was even worse, so I tossed it.

    Sorry, I don't have the best lens. The bird was some distance off. The bird was in a tree by a man-made lake. Photo was taken on December 4th. It was probably around 50 degrees F.

    Thank you. That gave me enough to try to do some online research. It is similar to a Cassin's Kingbird. But, I suppose, the white around the tail feathers give it away as a Western. https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Cassins_Kingbird/id FWIW, here is one in flight.

    Merlin seems like an interesting app. But when I upload photos from my DSLR, to my desktop computer, it would seem absurd to then move the photos to my phone. Is there some website that will identify birds from an uploaded jpg?

    Invaded by black birds and starlings

    One thing I keep reading about, which does not work for me: is to use a tube feeder, and cut the perches shorter. This makes feeder more difficult for the smaller birds, but the grackles eat from a different port than the one that beside the perch. So this actually does not deter the grackles.
