    Starling on Balcony feeders

Yes. :eek!: We had the same problem. Now we only put a few peanuts, in the shell, ...... for the blue jaws .... and a small hand full of striped sunflower seed ... for the red wing blackbirds.....on the platform feeder. And put other seed and suet in caged or small perched etc. feeders for the...

    Mallard Ducks in backyard

About a month ago at dawn I noticed some mallard ducks flying around. Flying in very big circles.....They would go so far as to disappear from sight to the east....north....south. But would appear again. But when they reappeared there were more in their group. I watched very much wondering what...

What do Am. Goldfinches NOT like?

My house finches, cassin finches, nuthatches, chickadees.....LOVE safflower.....The few gold finches we're had only stay on the nyjer or nyjer/sunflower crushed feeders. So funny to think of them running other birds away.|:||

    Backyard viewing

Again thank you. We are looking at the Leupold Yosemite ... as suggested ... and maybe one or two others. Also it was so kind to have people share what to expect realistically with our vision issues. We needed that. |=)| Blunt is good sometimes. And helps us make an informed decision.

    shrubs....bird friendly

This spring we need to plant some bushes.....medium sized....in our yard and want to plant kinds that will attract. It would be helpful if someone from the Denver area has experience with this. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have read books, but personal experience is always the...

    Backyard viewing

Thank you for all the thoughtful advice. I am taking notes and will check out your recomendations. Both my husband and I have somewhat declining vision. Yes we have glasses/contacts, but our vision (due to health issues) can not be corrected to 20/20 anymore....Not real bad, but not the best...

Nice picture....and a very happy bird it seems...|:D| We have a LOT of house finches. I counted 80 recently for a backyard bird count.....ours seem to roost in large evergreens. But have to say your set up does apear much nicer. We had a bird sleep on our porch light earlier this fall, but only...

    American yellow goldfinch question

Wow....And we haven't had a yellow goldfinch in a couple of weeks.....and then it was only two. My husband said....."Hummmmm. 8 feededs is a lot." Invaded by black birds and starlings

We had to replace our seed with Safflower seed or use caged/starling proof seed or suet feeders....Check online and read all reviews to see what works best. And we use some feeders that only small birds could use. I counted 55 Starlings in the yard on the lawn today, but only 4 were...

    Feeder and resident Cooper's Hawk

We had a sharp shinned hawk at our feeders. And it did hide sometimes in the shrubs nearby. I didn't know what to do either so I waited and the birds would take off after an attack and when the number of attacks increased they stayed away longer and longer......Fewer birds naturally seemed to...

Greedy crows eating all the food in my garden... Way of stopping them?

Very good suggestions. I really can use the idea of the placement of a mesh covered ground feeder under a hanging feeder to protect spillage. I never would have thought of that. :t:

Lack of leaves and where birds sleep

That makes sense. Thank you. Maybe I'll look into a roosting house sometime.

Lack of leaves and where birds sleep

The past few months that we have been feeding the birds, many birds of all kinds resided in the trees aound our home. I could go outside very early in the morning to add seed to the feeders to the sounds of wonderful chirping and singing. However now that the trees have lost their leaves and the...

    Hello from Colorado

Hi everyone from an older lady in Colorado. :gh: I love reading everyone's posts from all over the world. What fun and how interesting. I used to feed birds when we lived in the foothills long ago but now that we moved to the subs in the city it is way different here. But we do have a large...

    Hawk problem

Thank you for your advice. Because of the way the yard is, moving the feeders is not possible. We do have shrubs and a very large pine tree they head to when needed. So that does help. We may remove the feeder for a couple of weeks, but not sure that will affect things. We have a family feeding...

    Hawk problem

Little nervous about posting, but I do not know what to do about a sharp-shinned (I think) hawk at our bird feeder. We have seen him almost daily. He caught 3 birds we know about. One evening recently when we were sitting after dinner watching the birds. He landed on the feeder scaring one into...

House Sparrows at safflower seed feeder.

Now I am concerned. I put out safflower a month or so ago to discourage house sparrows. I have it in the regular house (?) type feeder and a basic tube weighted feeder...It has helped a lot. They do not like it.....well so far. We had such huge numbers of the house sparrows before the change...

How do you deal with house sparrows?

I am fairly new. But had the same problem. I changed some of my feeders to safflower seed. I still get many different birds that like it. The house sparrows do not. Neither do the grackles. But pretty much all the other birds like it fine. It did take a little while. I also have a weighted...
