    Harlequin ladybird? Surrey, UK

Ah! That's why I couldn't find a matching ladybird then - doh. Thanks for that :t:

    Harlequin ladybird? Surrey, UK

Hello. The attached little fellow appeared on my bathroom wall earlier this year (March) and hung around for quite a while, never venturing far. He's pictured here on the grouting between tiles as an idea of scale. I've tried the old Google image search but I've not really found a conclusive ID...

Flower ID, Thames Path, October 2017

Ok, there's no way I would have known that. Trust me to be quite taken with the flowers of an invasive weed though :-C Thanks for the info Nutcracker

Caterpillar ID, Oare Marshes, Kent, August 2017

Ah. Lovely stuff - thanks for that :t:

Flower ID, Thames Path, October 2017

I feel this is probably a bit of a stupid question given how many of these flowers there were on a walk from Petersham towards Kingston at the weekend, especially in the area between Ham and Teddington. That makes me think they are quite common and I should know what they are by now - but I...

Caterpillar ID, Oare Marshes, Kent, August 2017

Can anyone ID the attached caterpillar seen at Oare Marshes in Kent earlier this summer please? I've tried Google and the nearest I've come to is some sort of processionary moth but I really have little confidence in that ID so I am here for some expert eyes. It was climbing up a wooden...

    2 moths, SW London

    Cheers fellas!

    2 moths, SW London

Moths aren't really my thing but this year I am taking photos of more things with the hope of identifying them (having them identified!) later so I can learn a bit more about taxa. 1. Seen at London WWT on 6th August, on the outside of the wildside hide. I've not captured anything in the image...

Spotted Flycatcher? SW London, 13th August

Thank you both - I'll happily take that!

Spotted Flycatcher? SW London, 13th August

Can someone confirm the attached is a Spotted Flycatcher please? It was sallying out from a willow tree in Hampton Court (Home) Park this morning. Never seen one there (or anywhere round here, actually) so my fingers are crossed... Mat

    What bird is this?

Not that it's a species I see very often but I have heard reeve used in the field by UK birders young (perhaps a relative term :-O) and old. It's perhaps not overly common but not completely unheard of either. It may be regional, possibly even generational but as I say I have heard it used by...

    What bird is this?

I wonder if the possible confusion over male/female from the OP is down to plumage. mancalan, the bird is not in breeding plumage so doesn't have the big showy next ruff you may associate with this species

    Buzzard? SW London, July '17

I've had Red Kite at Richmond Park and London WWT but never in Home Park/Bushy Park

    Labyrinth spider web?

While out and about in the local big parks (Richmond Park, Bushy Park, Hampton Court Park - all SW London) at the weekend I noticed a number of spiders' webs that intrigued me. They were low down, only a few inches off the floor, and largely horizontal but had a "funnel" type structure at one...

    Buzzard? SW London, July '17

There are a number of wild Buzzard sightings throughout the local parks, several of which are Royal Parks (although this one isn't, but I think it's part of the Hampton Court Palace estate so presumably managed by Historic Royal Palaces). This is my first Buzzard sighting there but I've had...

    Buzzard? SW London, July '17

The attached photo was taken on 15th July at a spot in Home (Hampton Court) Park that has always been good for Little Owl. Obviously this is a much bigger bird of prey which I assume to be a (Common) Buzzard - am I correct?

Darter? Hampton Court Park, July '17

What would mark it out as an immature male rather than a female? Not that I am questioning the ID, just trying to learn a few bits along the way
  19. M

Darter? Hampton Court Park, July '17

Is the attached a female Common Darter? Seen at Hampton Court Park, SW London, 15th July.

Hoverflies, London WWT, 14th July '17

I'm still photographing random insects but you'll be pleased to know I'm at least having a stab at identifying them :eek!: Two hoverflies from London WWT last Friday: 1. I'm struggling with this one. A lot of the Syrphus and Eupoedes species look very similar to me and hoverflies aren't...

    unknown duck, london wetlands

They're a pretty common sighting around many waterbodies in SW London. It's pretty unusual to go to the likes of Richmond Park and Bushy Park without seeing them. There are often a few dotted around at London WWT

    Bumblebees, London WWT, 1st July

I'm not, no. I don't really do the whole social media thing. I'll keep looking on and off but ultimately if it goes unidentified it won't be the end of the world. I do appreciate the efforts though - thanks

    Bumblebees, London WWT, 1st July

Thanks everyone. I can see #2 & #3 in the first post as white-tailed but I am still struggling with the probably cuckoo bee. Any pointers welcome as I can't match it up to anything on the BBCT website

Unknown flower, London WWT, May '17

Oh, an iris. Well, well, well. Thank you. In my defence (not that it really is one) I live in a flat with no real garden. I also think I've had a major blind spot when it comes to flowers, going back many years
