Any "compact scopes" that you like?

Hi Chuck. I have done an extensive review of small scopes, including fancy Kowa and Opticrons, and ED50 is by far the best, esp with wide eyepiece. I tried four different ones, variation is substantial, order several and keep best. Epoxy central seam to avoid splitting. When it all comes...

Do a search. well known. A good ED50 is better than Opticron. Epoxy is your friend.

Zeiss SFL 8x40, A Field Review

All the fanboys (including me) are out in full force! SFLs forever! Interesting experience yesterday - Had my hands literally full with a heavy tripod/scope, camera with big tele around neck, and I stuffed the x30SFLs in the pocket while my wife used the x40s. Fell in love with the x30s again...

    SFL x40 permanent price drop?

Whatever it is, it's a great deal.

    Best all-around: SFL 8x30 or 8x40?

I predict you will love the x40s.

    Best all-around: SFL 8x30 or 8x40?

I might also add... I generally wear my glasses with bins (though not always) and have deep set eyes...exit pupil is important for those of us in this category... 8x40SFLs are great in this regard...the 8x30s workable but not perfect (for me).

    Best all-around: SFL 8x30 or 8x40?

These sorts of questions are tough as they don't indicate all the other bins if any a user has, and what they're trying to achieve with the new bins relative to others. Would you sell the Conquests, or are these a second pair since your wife likes the Conquests (beware, she will steal the SFLs...

Nikon ED 50 broken in two. Best way to fix?

You got me looking at my photo, and now my scope. I'm gonna apply another bead of epoxy! That sucker ain't gonna break, I assure you.

Nikon ED 50 broken in two. Best way to fix?

I understand what you're saying, but I applied the epoxy quite thickly - quite built up, about 2-3mm at seam. It is hard for me to imagine the scope splitting again.

Looking for Travel Scope but Cheaper End of Market

Nikon Ed50 all the way. Worth trying several samples and keeping best. Epoxy main seam.

4 weeks tropical birding with the Zeiss SFL 8x30

I really appreciate this thread, and as posted elsewhere had a similar experience (sans theft) on our recent 3 week vacation in Europe with the 8x30 SFL. A bin that manages to be just small and light enough to get brought along when larger heavier ones wouldn't be, and provides the excellent...

Blurry black edge in SFL 8x30 ?

Definitely a thing with the 8x30SFLs, but it doesn't keep me from appreciating its other unique virtues.

Zeiss SFL 8x40 versus Victory SF 8x42?

I'd also be very curious to see what the SFs would be like with SFL coatings. I have to believe someone at Zeiss has checked this out.

Zeiss SFL 8x40 versus Victory SF 8x42?

As I've said before, I prefer the SFLs to the SFs, disregarding cost. No brainer for me actually. You can search for prior threads. I personally think the 8x40SFLs are the best all round birding bin bar none. I think the red Zeiss coating is a bit of a spoof - it gives a dash of faerie...

    8x30 SFL appreciation

Went on a lovely hike on Tuesday with my nephew to the Sunrise corner of Mt. Rainier. We hike all the way to the 3rd summit of Burroughs Mt., which is essentially a long tundra ridge peaking at 7800' that sits just a few thousand feet from the north face of Mt. Rainier. Mt. Rainier itself is...

Nikon ED 50 broken in two. Best way to fix?

Sorry missed your post they sent it back. I think you should insist on a replacement... This would be such an easy thing for Nikon to fix - just a slight change in the plastic casting and longer screws...it's been happening for years...

Nikon ED 50 broken in two. Best way to fix?

Send it back to Nikon and they will send you a new one. Seriously. That's what I did. Then epoxy the seam - see Strengthening the body seam on ED50 with epoxy

Leica Ultravid 8x20 dissection (The beauty)

...and I'm willing to bet the focus knob won't fall off... Nice review!

And another (yawn...) SFL 8x30 thread/question...

I'm a good respondent on this as I have both and am on a long international trip - not primarily birding, but birding along with other stuff. I really love the 8x30 SFLs on this trip - I don't think I would have brought the 40s as they would have just been too big. They are more finicky...

I am a huge fan of the basic Rick Young binocular harnesses.

How many people here have had problems with their Curio focus?

I did a quick search and so far four people have reported issues that I found: me, denco, mono, and scott98. Considering how many people actually post here, not sure if that's a lot or a little or in the middle. To be clear - I have owned many many bins and never had a failure. It has just...

How many people here have had problems with their Curio focus?

To be clear why I'm doing a second thread, I actually took some posts to heart and felt like perhaps my blanket statement was too harsh and the title wasn't explanatory. I thought I should be more evidence based and really find out how many focus issues people have actually had.

How many people here have had problems with their Curio focus?

Perhaps I was unfair in the other thread. Let's actually do a poll. How many people here have had an issue with either the focus knob or laggy focusing? Sample #1.

I'm sorry, but the Curios aren't serious bins

I'm definitely curious if SW will come up with a long term solution to this that works. The way my knob now wiggles makes me think there's no axle that it attaches to...that is more the norm. If this is just face glued, it's going to be a long term prob. If anything pocket bins should be...
