Barnacle Goose or Hybrid (NE Scotland, October)

Thanks both, that seems to be the consensus of opinion elsewhere too. That's my view too btw. It's presumably at the extreme end of variation - I haven't found an internet picture of a pure bird that matches the head pattern of this one yet but it is matched by pictures of obvious hybrids. It...

Barnacle Goose or Hybrid (NE Scotland, October)

I'm curious if this goose which spent some days locally at Donmouth Aberdeen is considered within the variation of pure Barnacle or not, or if a hybrid with e.g. Cackling Goose should be considered? It looked very much like a Barnacle to me but the eyestripe is far more prominent then I can...

Montagu's Harrier disappears as UK breeding species?

I'm thinking that breeding on Braco Moor, Perthshire in 1950s would be the furthest north?

    Tern in Aberdeen, Scotland

Maybe it would help if the OP told us why he thinks it is a Common Tern?

    Waxwings in the U.K?

It's been quite thin for them this winter in NE Scotland, although there was a flock of up to 34 until recently in my Aberdeen neighbourhood that now seem to have moved on, perhaps to be seen further south...? 😀

Planning a bicycle trip through the Cairngorms

Hey Mike, I'm a birding cyclist based in Aberdeen - I know the Cairngorms pretty well. You're correct - no true high altitude roads. The Cockbridge Road is a spectacular ride taking you up past the Lecht Ski Centre into Moray, but you won't see the mountain species without a massive hike from...

    Birds fae Torry

There's been plenty of Bullfinchs on the hill lately (indeed they probably breed) - but it's rare that I get a conclusive look at them. I'm normally pretty conservative with claiming pyrrhula, but these 3 were beasts and worth keeping an eye out for!

    Birds fae Torry

There were three monstrous drake 'Northern Bullfinchs' on Tullos Hill yesterday. Anyone seen any across the tracks?

    Birds fae Torry

Short-eared Owl hunting the slopes of the S side of Nigg Bay at dusk tonight and a Woodcock flew over and landed on the recently mowed slopes of the old landfill.

Nice pics Andrew - particularly that flight shot! A smashing bird which much enlivened my cycle ride home tonight!

    P.c.sinensis....?

I think this my favourite Bird Forum thread for a long time. Kudos!

    Greenfinch Numbers.

Greenfinch are currently almost totally absent in my part of Aberdeen - formerly had c.50 birds visiting the garden, this winter I have seen only one visit briefly.

Iceland Gull on the rugby pitch in Seaton Park on Saturday. FPS tells me it's likely the same one as at Girdleness recently.

No sightings of the now legendary Seaton Park Toilet Duck?

    Crossbills

As I understand it, different crossbill call types co-exist in the same place, and seem to be reproductively isolated from each other, which is rather different from the examples you give.

    Birds fae Torry

I did a traverse of the hill in the rain this afternoon. 2 Yellow-browed Warblers were the highlight. Also Stonechat, Whinchat.

    Birds fae Torry

Gripped by that Wag, Andrew. Obviously need to replace those nice horse paddocks at Doonies with a Golf Course! I had a long boot round the gramps today in fine weather convinced that there must be a seam of Red-breasted Flys hiding somewhere. Alas reality was much more mundane. Chatfest 2014...

    Birds fae Torry

The fog finally lifted off the gramps today...revealing few birds! 'Chat Corner' is still going well with a loose flock of 2 Stonechats (m and f type), 1 Whinchat, 1 Wheatear, 1 Redstart (m) and a few robins.

    Birds fae Torry

Up in the perma-fogged wilds of Tullos there were 2 Yellow-browed Warblers tonight. There's also been a bit of a chat build up lately with Stonechat, Whinchat & Redstart on the heath when I can see it. Annoyingly a monster warbler sat up on the railway fence by the coast road down to Nigg Bay as...

    Birds fae Torry

Interesting day in the 'hood today - a caldrid sp and a small flock of black-tailed godwits flew through the fog past my office window on Wellington Road!

    Zino's petrel???

The night trip is an amazing experience , and I can recommend it! You can't see the drops properly so not that scary! ;-) We heard Manx Shearwater too, down at the extreme south of their range they nest in the mountains.

    Birds fae Torry

I had a yomp around Tullos Hill & Doonies this morning. Undoubted highlight was a very obliging juv Cuckoo on the coast path at Long Slough.
