    Hawfinches at Mickleham

Myself and two other birders returned to the site this morning after dipping a dozen reported birds yesterday afternoon, which were seen at 10.30am. It was quite a spectacle when in the end we gaged that the number of birds present was over 100, but most probably less than 130. See my blog here...

    Geese, Surrey

Thanks everyone, it's clear then that this isn't going to reach a conclusion, field observations and photos far too poor. Unlucky that it was extremely fleeting in bad conditions giving a false impression of something unusual, or not giving conclusive enough evidence if it is something better...

    Geese, Surrey

I realise they're both a similar size. Regardless, I maintain they seemed quite small to me but I guess this impression must have been created by the perceived slightness of the birds more than anything, or was just an illusion and/or was my schema for an interesting looking grey goose clouding...

    Geese, Surrey

Draycote birding: I have no more than five shots of the geese, all taken within a time frame of less than a minute between first seeing them and them disappearing - I always like to spend more time watching than photographing but put getting at least a handful of record shots first as my top...

    Geese, Surrey

Thanks guys. I'm swaying your way that they could well have been Greylags caught at the wrong moment (consensus of opinion from my various efforts so far is split between 'Greylag' or 'COULD be Taiga Bean but wouldn't shout on it') despite strong first impressions (and the idea from some photos)...

    Geese, Surrey

Ok - played about and added a few more photos http://devilbirder.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/geese.html ; personally I'm failing to see that they're Greylags, I'd be surprised if even my brief general impression in the field of them not being Greylags was wrong and the photos show largely uniform...

    Geese, Surrey

interesting... though brief they appeared small and dark in the field; also Greylags' pale wings show up even in dark or distant photos. I disagree that the bill is heavy and believe a pale orange bill would bw noticeable in these ics. I'll wait till I get home and have a proper look before...

    Geese, Surrey

Hi, sorry can't post pics direct as I'm on my phone on the bus but I've quickly whacked a couple of shots of a pair of small grey geese that flew over my patch today on here http://devilbirder.blogspot.com/2012/03/geese.html - I have my suspicions but would like to hear some thoughts first. Bit...

    Redpoll, Surrey

Hi Following a report of 2 Mealy Redpolls on my patch yesterday I headed down to have a look. The birds were apparently with a flock of 20 Lesser Redpolls and there was certainly no big flock around but two of the three redpolls that were present did look Mealy-ish to be (links to photographs...

Most efficient way to carry gear?

Thanks all, some great advice and I have some shopping to do. It is important to me to have both a compact and SLR camera plus scope with me whenever I'm at the patch, there's been times when I've missed IDs or photo opportunities because I've chosen to leave them at home and since then I've...

Most efficient way to carry gear?

Thanks Jim - the products on that page look promising. I quite literally had one for a little while in the early days, Ian, when my dad used to take me out ;)

Most efficient way to carry gear?

Hi there I've always had problems in terms of balancing comfort and taking the necessary gear when I'm out in the field. For quite some time I used a rucksack but gave up with this when my feeble shoulders couldn't take it anymore - I had to pause and take it off every ten minutes. Basically...

    Current BOU List

The Birdwatch magazine list gives each species a number according to rarity/how 'available' birds are. Mind you, that list follows slightly different taxonomy.

    Surrey Birding

Barn Owl in old cow shed at Canons Farm again yesterday. Park by Canons Farmhouse, Canons Lane, Burgh Heath and walk c330 yards east, turn left at the derelict barn and view through the door of the large barn 60 yards on the right. It's in there once every week or so. Also a wintering Chiffchaff...

    Spotted not common sandpiper?

I'm with John that the tail projection is a little on the short side - I don't remember seeing many Common Sands with one that short over here. Also, it's distant and hard to tell but it looks too plain on the wings for a Common, perhaps. Legs look good, though.

Yes, Water Pipit as far as I'm concerned

    Surrey Birding

One of my New Year's resolutions was to try to post on this thread a bit ... A couple of Mealy Redpolls reported in a Kingswood garden on Jan 2nd (in the Canons Farm recording area). No news on the Barn Owl there yet this year but I'll be looking this evening.

What was your best birding Christmas present this year?

A trolley for lugging my gear around on long days at the patch

What Do You Make of This? (New Forest, UK)

I can see why you're stumped. When I first glanced at the image the head & the bird's left wing blended into each other and looked like a very strange head! Look again, and they separate, leaving you with a Herring Gull.

    Attention norfolk birders!!

Hi Sharon - Green and Great Spotted Woodpeckers are common and widespread throughout Norfolk and you do not need to go anywhere in particular to see them; you will definitely bump into both species several times during your stay. David.

    Surrey Birding

Canons Farm near Banstead is worth a go while you're in the area, RipleyBirder. Easy to get to by the 420 metro bus from Sutton to Tattenham Way/A217 junction where you cross the road and you're there. In the last week and a bit local scarcities such as Hen Harrier, Short-eared Owl and Corn...

my apologies for not being online much over the last couple of months, I've been settling into college and of course birding has been busy! They're my excuses anyway. Pariah, have you not counted House Crow. You would get 90 points if you decide to count it. Yes newbies you can join in, I...
