Field and human guide recommendations please

COVID restrictions permitting, I'm due to spend a week in Barbados in November for a friend's birthday celebrations. I'll want to escape for some birding. Looks as though birding on the island is limited, but would be good to have a local guide one day/half a day to show me the best spots. I'm...

Spare perch for RSPB easy clean feeder?

A squirrel managed to dislodge and run away with (quite why it took it away with it is beyond me) one of the green metal perches in our RSPB easy clean seed bird feeder. Before I shell out 20-odd quid on a new feeder, I wondered if anyone knows where one can buy a replacement part? EBay has...

    Birding near Lake Garda

I have just returned from a week's holiday by Lake Garda. We were staying on the eastern side, in the village of Garda. I had contacted Maurizio Sighele at www.veronabirdwatching.org in advance to arrange a day's guided birding. Maurizio had got back to me to say that he would not be in the...

    La Palma unidentfieds !

I confess to my first thought on the third bird being a Spotted Flycatcher. I am embarrassed I can't tell a pipit from a flycatcher! Can someone give me some useful pointers based on what we can see on the third photo? Thanks. Matt

    Jaen and Granada

Despite the obvious lack of interest of local birders in providing me with any tips in response to my entry above (a first for me with such enquiries on this Forum - note to self re south-west Andalucian birders....) I thought I'd mention the little we saw on what was not a birding trip. In...

    Jaen and Granada

I shall be spending one night with friends in Cancelada before having two nights in each of Jaen and Granada from 10-14 September. We will make some time for birding in between the sight seeing. Could someone confirm whether there is any point in stopping at Fuente de Piedra on the way to Jaen...

    Marseille city break October

There are fantastic birding spots nearby - Camargue, Crau, les Alpilles especially. The city itself is not great for birding, or at least wasn't when I lived there 20 years ago... Matt

Golden Oriole song? Near Miranda do Douro, Portugal

Thanks to all for your responses. I'm attributing this one to a Spotless Starling I think. Now in the lower Alentejo before heading for Sagres for a few days. Enjoying migration through Portugal, Miranda do Douro was dripping with migrating chats and flycatchers.

Golden Oriole song? Near Miranda do Douro, Portugal

Late afternoon today on the outskirts of a village I am staying in just north of Miranda do Douro, Portugal, I heard the unmistakeable flutey call of a Golden Oriole. I was not expecting to see or hear one at this time of year and I only heard it twice, but could not track it down (it was coming...

France - Oye Plage Reserve Naturelle - Calais

Oh dear. Certain news outlets clearly have a lot to answer for. Merlin, I think you can be confident that it's fine to visit those areas. There aren't actually that many people hanging around northern France looking for passage into the UK and those that are congregate near the Tunnel entrances...

    Anse de l'Aiguillon, La Rochelle

David I defer to the locals and those with better knowledge than me, but you could probably do worse than spend a few hours at the Réserve Naturelle de Lilleau des Niges on Ile de Ré. I've seen a lot of waders on passage there during autumn in years gone by. Matt

Seeking tips for western Galicia in mid September

I am spending one night in Baiona and two in Santiago de Compostela in mid September as a detour on a driving trip around Portugal. Can anyone recommend any good birding spots in the area, maybe some decent coastal/sea-watching spots or inland gems? Is Baiona any good itself? We are staying at...

Outer Moray Firth - Challenge 2

Hi, I wonder if the headless bird is a Kittiwake rather than a Fulmar. Not sure Fulmars have black legs and feet. I can't work out how to zoom into your flock, but they look vaguely aukish to me - guillemots perhaps? I could be well wide of the mark on both of these, mind.

    Dove type in the Netherlands

Hi - Wood Pigeon. A number of features help with the ID, of which perhaps the white on the collar and also on the wings in flight are the easiest to spot, together with this being larger than the other doves/pigeons in Europe (I think).

    Northern Portugal in September

Better get looking into accommodation, car hire and routes! Right, all booked. Itinerary is (overnight stops listed): Porto - Baiona - Santiago de Compostela - Pousada Geres-Canicada - Miranda do Douro - Coimbra - a place midway between Beja and Castro Verde - Sagres, then fly home from Faro...

    Northern Portugal in September

Excellent - thanks for the feedback. I think we'll do a circular clockwise trip from Porto, up the coast into Galicia as far as Santiago de Compostela, then round down taking in Peneda Geres then east to the Douro near the Spanish border and along the valley back towards Porto. We should still...

    Northern Portugal in September

We enjoyed our trip to Lisbon and Evora a few weeks ago so much that we are thinking of doing a road trip around northern Portugal and some of Galicia in mid September for a couple of weeks (flying in and out of Porto). I am trying and failing to find bird trip reports from the Douro valley and...

Evora at the beginning of March 2015

No problem, nice to know we weren't too unlucky! Home now, didn't find a cuckoo, but a short stop at the pools and marshes by Alcochete on the way to the airport provided recompense with loads of roosting waders, a Black Winged Kite, an Osprey fishing in the Tagus and a smart Water Pipit already...

Evora at the beginning of March 2015

Thanks! We painstakingly staked out the Common Magpies, but in vain. Only found Crag Martins at the smaller bridges, but will try again tomorrow.

Evora at the beginning of March 2015

Currently in Evora, headed to the Mourao area this morning (not much around) and then explored the minor roads southeast of Evora this afternoon - thanks for the tip. Have failed to see Red-rumped Swallow or Great Spotted Cuckoo, but was pleased - and surprised - to hear 3 different Quail out on...

Evora at the beginning of March 2015

That's a great link, I didn't know that site and was going to go more by luck based on the French crane migration website which also includes occasional counts from Extremadura. Thanks for this. Matt

Evora at the beginning of March 2015

Gonçalo Thanks for these tips, much appreciated. Would be great to see some cranes, I'll keep an eye out on the Web for news as to whether they are still around by then. Matt

Evora at the beginning of March 2015

My husband and I have booked a long weekend in Portugal at the end of Feb/beginning of March and will spend 2 nights in Evora (after 2 in Lisbon). It's mainly a sightseeing trip, but we'll have binoculars with us and maybe will take a scope too. We usually go to Extremadura every year in late...

    Norfolk birding

Driving back to Burnham Market from Warham Greens this evening after sundown, having enjoyed 2 male hen harriers, two merlins, one barn owl and a sparrowhawk on the salt marsh, we had another barn owl from the car and then to my amazement stumbled upon a red kite roost - at least 10 birds. Is...
