So is the Canon R5 a bird photography body?

I feel your pain re the overheating! What we experienced in the hides in late spring whilst just taking stills was definitely a cause for concern.

R7 - Shipping Notice vs Backorder - first impressions from the lucky few

Sounds about right but it's not exactly unexpected. I would suggest that three hours aint really enough to form an opinion. I haven't got an R7 but I'm sure I would use it every time in preference to the 7D2.

Is it really "must have" Adobe Photoshop for excellent redaction of digital photographs?

I pay £120 per year subscription for Photoshop. It plays an ever decreasing role in processing since I bought DXO and I ask myself do I need it? It's only the price of half a pint of beer a week so I hang on to it.

Nikon will reportedly discontinue production of its SLR cameras as per Nikkei Asia.

None whatsoever. It looks like both you and I agree on my comment. I didn't write that with any bad feeling, it's just how it is.

Nikon will reportedly discontinue production of its SLR cameras as per Nikkei Asia.

For years it's been quite obvious that he has a fetish for buying top of the range gear and has the spare cash to indulge himself in it. I personally think that he's not yet got past the point - and never will - of knowing how operate any of it to more than two per cent of its potential.

Park are selling them for £1999 which is great but they're out of stock.

    R7 to be announced soon.

My thoughts weren't about UK pricing John, that's pretty much fixed by Canon and the UK retailers won't have much if any room for manoeuvre. I was hoping for a solid, weather proofed body, stacked 24 - 28mp sensor, a considerably bigger buffer and perhaps quad pixel af. I'd happily have paid...

    R6 or R7

It's a question of degrees really. I used a 20mp 1DX2 for five years and cropped the huge majority of my shots. Of course the R6 images can be cropped, you just have less room for manoeuvre than with a higher mp sensor.

    Paphos revisited April 19-27th 2022

Just caught up with this report Ken. A great trip and super report, I wouldn't have expected any less from you. Maybe next spring we will pound the beat together!

    R7 to be announced soon.

Crikey! It's a full £1000 less than I thought/hoped it would be! There will be some serious compromises, I'm going to sit on the fence for quite some time.

    R7 to be announced soon.

I think it may be £2400. The cost of soaring prices and hi tech material shortages will be evident when this hits the UK dealers. That said I'm very interested in one and it would be a pleasant surprise if it's any less.

So is the Canon R5 a bird photography body?

A 14 day trip abroad photographing migration saw me use the the R5 for 2 two hour sessions every day. I had two freezes in total so no complaints.

So is the Canon R5 a bird photography body?

Another session with 1.5.2, about 750 shots in all without a freeze. The af seems sticker than I can previously recall and TBH it's s*** hot. I'm only testing on flyers initially as I think that if they're ok then all else will be. I'm still getting random variation in critical sharpness during...

So is the Canon R5 a bird photography body?

I beg to disagree, my experience is quite the opposite. Simply being closer is sometimes anything but simple and the overwhelming majority of bird photographers will already be using a long lens. There is an option of supposedly lossless CRAW which reduces the file sizes by roughly 50% and...

So is the Canon R5 a bird photography body?

I was very disappointed yesterday. I recently upgraded from 13.1, which was performing impeccably to 15.0 which I used extensively yesterday and the experience was bordering between frustrating and downright bad. Multiple freezes in the morning seemed to clear in the afternoon. On checking the...

Upgrading for a 7D which way to go?

FWIW, with plenty of practise you can fine tune a tap sequence on the shutter button that will reduce the fps in electronic mode. It's not something that I've personally tried but I've read about a few people advocating it. 12fps is nearly always plenty for me as it is.

Spot on Mark. the feeding station shot puts everything into perspective, re just how tiny the bird is.

So is the Canon R5 a bird photography body?

I think I'll try the upload Mark, I don't need to depend on having the R5 until the end of March so I'd have time to address anything untoward. From reading about other peoples bad experiences it seems possible that problems may become more severe depending on the amount of customisation applied...

So is the Canon R5 a bird photography body?

That's a cracking image Kevin. I've read a few complaints from peeps on various sites about issues with firmware 1.5, many resolved by a reset and some are not. I've decided to hold fire for now. Interestingly Canon rumours have posted a link to enable a firmware downgrade. Cheers.

I've yet to load up the latest firmware to the R5. Has anyone experienced issues with 1.5?

So is the Canon R5 a bird photography body?

Hi Mark. If you install 1.5.0 all the missing ones will be incorporated in the firmware update.

So is the Canon R5 a bird photography body?

I'm using DXO 4 Elite to convert the R5 RAWS and it does an excellent job, I'm not upgrading to DXO 5 as the major change is that it includes support for Fuji cameras and not much else. The biggest plus for me is that I've cut the time to process an image down by half when compared with Adobe...

Getting ready to purchase L series lense, looking for recommendations.

Assuming you intend to hold on to the 7D2, the 100-400 you mention is a truly excellent lens and would serve you well. It will work for BIF with a 1.4x attached but would not be my choice for fast action. You may struggle to get the desired background blur with this lens. Perhaps also consider a...

So is the Canon R5 a bird photography body?

Very nice images barred wobbler a testimony to Eye af - which I also endorse as being exceptional. You seem to have a deep seated antipathy towards Zone af despite the fact that by your own admission, you've never tried it. That is quite bizarre but each to their own. For the record I don't...
