    Old Photos from California

I found a lot of old photos hidden on my hard drive yesterday, and after going through them I found lots from a trip to California I had during winter 08/09. I didn't have a great camera at the time so the photos are awful, but I was hoping at least some could be ID'd? #1 - ? #2 - Semipalmated...

    Meadow Pipit/GBBG, Rainham Marshes UK

I'm at least 95% sure of these ID's, but gulls are my weakest bird group and I have little experience with pipits so I thought I would get (belated) second opinions on these. Taken on the Thames path by Rainham Marshes a couple of weeks ago. 1 and 2 are the same bird.

Micro ID - Tortrix of some kind?

Me again... Umming and ahhing about this either being a Eupoecilia sp or Cochylis sp. but I'm not sure enough to call it without some outside guidance.

    LBBYU vs Langmaid's YU

Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing vs Langmaid's Yellow Underwing - what's a good way to tell the difference between the two? I had one fly into my TV not too long ago, not sure on the best way to tell them apart. Is one more likely than the other in South London?

    Green Macro

Brindled Green? Green Arches? Can't quite figure this one out.

    Fly ID - Beris vallata?

Having some trouble with this - I think it's Common Orange Legionnaire, Beris vallata, except it has completely black legs which is making me doubt myself. I don't even know if it's actually a fly or not... it's been walking the entire time... EDIT: I've been informed elsewhere it's a sawfly...

    Is this a Single-dotted Wave?

I'm not 100% convinced and this is the best place to get help with ID's. Pictures are mediocre quality.

    Couple of plants ID help

Finally got a copy of the Blamey and Fitter field guide so went out to the North Downs in Surrey (Kingswood/Chipstead area) since I'd heard about Cut-leaved Germander being there from a PSLer. Ticked off a lot of plants, but these two I wasn't sure of. The first is probably Yellow Rattle, but...

Best places to bird round Manchester?

I'm a Salfordian moved down south, but I'm coming back home for a week at the end of August and was wondering the best places to go since I could probably squeeze in one or two visits during that time. Pennington Flash is a consideration, a train to Martin Mere, Salford Quays - but are any of...

    Moth I can't figure out

Had this fly into the window not too long ago, drawing a blank on it though.

    A Beginner's UK 2015 List

My list started on 20th February and I'm hoping to crack 100 by the end of the year (it was originally 50 but I cracked that fairly quickly) Those in bold are 2015 lifers. 20/02 - Garden, Penge, London 01 - Common Blackbird 02 - Great Tit 03 - Dunnock 04 - Common Wood Pigeon 27/02 - Crystal...

How to find people to birdwatch with?

I'm still quite a novice with birding, and also autistic, and have been helped out a few times at reserves by more experienced birders who helped me see things I might otherwise have missed (Spoonbill and Marsh Harrier at Rainham Marshes especially come to mind here) and realised I could...

    Spotters Scope help

Hi, I've figured that a spotters scope is the next thing I *need* to purchase in order to get anywhere with birding, after a couple of trips went awry because everything was just too distant for my binoculars to be of any use. My problem is that I have no clue where to start, and have a very...

    Introducing Myself (again...)

Hi! This is my second post here - the first one was four years ago introducing myself then promptly never returning |>| so here I am again, reintroducing myself. I'm Roo (Andrew properly) and I moved down to London a few years ago, and had the intent to go off and explore but never did, until...

    Just another introduction thread!

Hello there! I'm Roo, I recently moved down to London from Manchester and I'm indulging on the internet as much as possible until I have to settle back into ordinary life, haha. I've been interested in birds since before I can remember, and was in the YOC for a few years as a kid. I had kinda...
