    Winter birding around St Moritz?

Hi, I'm planning a trip to Venice by train later in the winter using the Bernina Express for either the outward or return journeys. I thought of stopping off for a couple of days in the Pontresina/St Moritz area to do a little walking/birding. I understand that the area is around 6000 ft...

    Cruising on the Broads

Hi, I thought it might be an interesting idea to rent a small cruiser (or similar) and pootle around the waterways of Norfolk and Suffolk for a week in May. I'm a photographer (wildlife and landscape) so that would be my ambition. In my minds eye I see a clear spring morning with fog lifting...

    Pink magpie

This was first reported by a non-birder as a rosy starling. As I was in the area I thought I'd go and take a look. Imagine my surprise when I saw this! My first view was against bright sunlight and the whole bird appeared to be glowing red. In normal light it appeared to be a bright pink and...

    Green woodpecker behaviour at nest

About a month ago I found a green woodpecker nest site in a tree close to a road. I watched for a few hours from my vehicle nearby and concluded that the birds must be sitting on eggs, as I had seen one enter the hole but not leave it (wexit?). On my next visit about ten days ago, it was pretty...

    Starlings at Gretna Green?

Just wondering if there's any way of finding out if the starlings are back at the Gretna/Rigg roost yet this winter?

The peregrine by J. A. Baker

I'm just re-reading this for the first time for about thirty years. The first time it blew me away and some of the novelty has worn off in the meantime. But it's still a fabulous read. What is the consensus over the actual content now? That this guy - probably not a very experienced birder -...

Where to see ruff in breeding plumage?

Does anyone know where it might be possible to see ruff in breeding plumage in the UK? Or even a lek? I see from the "Atlas" that they do nest in the UK. I wonder if any of these locations are on reserves with viewing facilities, or if birds on passage to these locations prior to breeding can...

    Leica repairs?

I have a pair of Leitz 10x40 (the rubber armoured ones) which need a repair. The main focus wheel no longer works properly. Can anyone recommend a good repairer? I see Optrep no longer do Leica's. Many thanks.

    Gretna starling roost/display?

Does anyone have any up-to-date information on the location of (and best viewing point for Gretna starling "murmuration"), please? Many thanks.

    Communal roosting by bitterns

I was at Leighton Moss last week and had several excellent sightings of bitterns. From late afternoon until dusk several birds flew towards a certain section of the reedbed so I wondered if they were roosting communally. Should I let the reserve staff know or assume that they know already? Thanks.

Curious wader, north-west England, September 21st

What do you make of this? It was confidently identified by another birder, but I wasn't so sure. It also has a white rump. The two others are dunlins.

    Bids in industrial settings?

Any suggestions please as to where in the UK I can photograph birds in an industrial setting? Saltholme (RSPB) looks suitable but the reserve only appears to be open from 9am -5 pm. Is there alternative access to it or other areas nearby? Landguard / Trimley marshes also looks promising with...
