Quintana Roo birding without a guide?

I am going to Quintana Roo at the end of March and hope to do a fair bit of birding. It sounds like there's some great places to go in the area, like Si'an Kaan and Reserva Toh, but literally every review I read about these places mentions a guide. I haven't necessarily read anything that says...

Confirm Juv/Imm Song Sparrow -- Albany, CA, US

I believe this to be a juvenile/immature Song Sparrow. Is that correct? Taken from the bayside fields near the Albany Mudflats earlier today. https://imgur.com/O5Bbq5I

Red-collared Lorikeet in Sydney Royal Botanical Garden

I have photographic evidence of what I am quite sure is a Red-collared Lorikeet at the Sydney Royal Botanical Garden. It was hanging with a small group of Rainbow Lorikeets. Am I correct in assuming that this is a single escaped housepet? My field guide for Australia does not show these...

    Clark's Nutcrackers in all-Juniper habitat

Today I visited one of my favorite local hotspots, located at the mouth of a canyon. The floor of the canyon has some deciduous trees, but the entire face of the north ridge is nothing but Juniper. I am under the impression that Clark's Nutcrackers basically eat nothing but pine nuts, maybe...

    Cassia Crossbill

I live within a 4 hours drive of the Cassia Crossbill habitat and am thinking of going up this weekend to try my luck. Has anyone done this? What tips do you have from your experience? Is an iPhone adequate to record the voice to separate the Cassias from the Reds?

Savannah or Vespers Sparrow? Northern Utah

This picture was taken at the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge yesterday. I am torn between Savannah and Vespers. Let me know what you think, and please tell me what field marks you're using.

    Sandpiper Help, Northern Utah

My field notes are: Buff breast (not a band), clean white underparts, less distinct supercilium, only slightly decurved bill, legs don't seem to be yellow, wading with Avocets and Killdeer in wet mudflat. Looks to me most like a Baird's, but according to Sibley they don't like feeding in...

    Double check me: Wilson's Warbler?

Excuse me for being overly cautious, but this is a new species for me and the cap is not as black as I had hoped! Is this a Wilson's Warbler? Seen in Box Elder County, Utah today.

    Brewers Sparrows? Northern Utah

Are the birds in this picture Brewers sparrows? They were taken in a marshy riparian area. Something about them seems wrong for Brewers...too much contrast on the throat? Taken today. Album: https://imgur.com/a/cuCFWyH

Pale Eurasian or African Collared Dove? Northern Utah

Two pictures: https://imgur.com/a/yQI6i The first picture shows two birds--the one on the top just above the line of rocks is my suspected African, the one below is Eurasian. The second pictures shows the low contrast between the tips of the primaries and the rest of the wing. African...

    Sharpie vs. Coopers: Northern Utah

Taken today in my backyard. I'm pretty sure this is a Sharpie but I'm new to IDing these birds so I wanted to make sure. https://imgur.com/eaIDh3G

New video on the progress of reintroduced Alala

For those of you that don't know, the Alala (or Hawaiian Crow) went extinct in the wild in 2002. It is now being introduced to the Big Island. Here's a new video from the Alala Project on the birds' progress: https://vimeo.com/252588023

Strange squirrel behavior on my ground tray

Has anyone else experienced this before? The other day, my ground feeding tray, which has a mix of millet and black oil sunflower seeds, was full of pine cones. I thought that was bizarre, threw them all out, and today the pine cones are back. I haven't seen a squirrel do this, but they are...

Taken today at Kealia Pond NWR, Maui, HI

One duck and one gull, with multiple pictures for the gull. My guess is some weird domestic mallard and a laughing gull, but I'm particularly bad at ID'ing gulls. Any gull is a rarity in Hawaii, so I want to get the ID right. https://imgur.com/a/hgUf8

    Raptor Help - Northern Utah

Took these pictures yesterday at pretty high altitude in the Cache National Forest. My best guess on the first picture is a juv. Red-tailed Hawk. Last two pictures are the same individual. Lighting is real bad, but the lighter head and wing shape (not that I have particularly great skills...

    Bird ID book for Germany

At the end of the month, I'll be spending a week in Gummersbach (near Cologne). It's not a birding-only trip, but I would like to be able to get out at least a little and ID what I see. Any recommendations for a book? I use Sibley's here and love it. I greatly prefer illustrations to pictures...

Lincoln's or Song Sparrow? Northeast Utah

Seen on a fallen, dead tree sticking out of reeds on the shallow, stagnant side of a pond in Ashley National Forest. Of course the stick was in the exact wrong spot for taking pictures of sparrows. Album here: http://imgur.com/a/qVNYx

    Quail sp., Northern Utah

I entered this bird as Gambel's Quail into eBird, which would be quite rare for my area. That sighting was rejected, which I assume means the bird is actually a California Quail. Help a relatively new birder out--this seems to have Gambel's Quail markings, so what are the best ways to...

Am I O.K. to mow the lawn?

I've got a nest for robins in my yard in a tree that is about two feet from the lawn, and the robins are about 5.5 feet up in the tree. Will it stress them out too much to mow or not?

    Today was GREAT

Apparently two American Robins have decided to have a brood in my tree :) (Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, I didn't think it belonged in Nestboxes, because it isn't in a box!) Is there anything special I should be doing to make sure they have the best time possible? Also... I read that...

    UtahnBirder's 2010 Year List

Flying from Cozumel to Cancun, and then Cancun to SLC in airports all day is NOT the greatest way to start the year. Since this will be my first complete year of birding, I'm not going to set the bar too high. 100 will be the goal. Luckily at the Cozumel airport I did happen upon two birds. 1...

    Christmas Goodies

What bird stuff did you get for Christmas? I got a wooden suet-plug feeder, a hanging platform feeder, a seed scoop, a bad of Nut'n'Seed Mix, plus my young cousin made a finger-balancer American Robin for me. What was your haul?

    Quick!!! Help!!!

I've been procrastinating and it is too late to get a book... I leave for Cozumel (Yucatan Peninsula) tomorrow, and I would like a list of some birds that I would be likely to see! I have a world-wide bird book so I do have documentation of them, I just need a list of the common ones!

    Sharp-Tailed Sparrow

The ABA officially changed the names of Nelson's Sharp-Tailed Sparrow and Saltmarsh Sharp-Tailed Sparrow to Nelson's Sparrow and Saltmarsh Sparrow. So I suggest we change to opus to match.
