    Dippers near Blaenavon

Will be making a long trip from the flatlands of Essex to hopefully see the Rock Thrush. Are there any good streams near to there to see Dippers. Common for you, I know, but only a holiday bird for us!

    Ross-on-Wye suggestions

Having a few days break sight seeing around Ross-on-Wye with missus. Hope to get out for a bit of birding. Are there any Dippers around this area? Also thinking of trying Nags Head reserve for Pied Flycatcher? These would be my preferred interest coming from lowland Essex but open to suggestions?

    Pentax Q and 2750 mm 35mm equiv !?

Just a bit of lateral thinking and not strictly digiscoping. But the Pentax Q interchangeable lens camera now has third party adapters for other makes of lenses. Being effectively a compact size sensor with a 5.5x crop factor. This means if you had a 300mm DSLR lens and put it on the Q with the...

Pied Flycatcher arrival - West Country

I am in the Tiverton/Bampton area next week (16th-20th April). Is it too early to see Pied Flycatchers? If not, any good locations? Also would I need to go onto Exmoor for Dippers or are there some nearer good rivers.

    Blackcaps and nectar

Hi - I had a Blackcap come into my garden for the first time yesterday. It was feeding on the yellow flowers of my Mahonia bush. Presumably it was getting nectar. My question is - do they have long tongues? I took a photo and it looks like there could be a long projection from it's beak although...

    Grey Wagtail Roosting Habits

I am thrilled to have a Grey Wagtail visiting my garden for the first time. My garden and the ones backing on are about 80 ft each so the length of the road gives a fair size "green patch" in the middle of a housing estate. Bearing in mind my pond is only 5ft by 3ft with a small waterfall I was...

    Bluetit nest - a problem?

Hi - I have a web cam nest box. A bluetit has been roosting in it all winter. It spent about two weeks building a nest. Although two were about it seemed maybe only one was building the nest. Yesterday there was an egg in the nest but the female seemed out and about with no sign of incubation...

Where do the Redwings and Fieldfares go?

During the snow they were everywhere - parks, gardens, hedgerows and right into suburbia. They seem to have evaporated into thin air round here (S.Essex) and am hardly seeing any near the rural fields either. I understand food is available elsewhere now but it is also still available where it...
