I’ve just come back from a family holiday to Flores and happened to hook up with an excellent quality guide. I’m posting his resumé here in case anyone else is interested. I only had one full day from Labuan Bajo and managed to pick up these lifers, on top of many other Asian species...

    Guiding help for Flores, Indonesia

Does anyone know of any bird guide I could use for a day trip in Flores, based at Labuan Bajo? I am in touch with Maximilian Wago (who has been very helpful) but unfortunately he’s busy on another tour. He has offered me his driver for the day, who knows the spots, but not the birds, at a very...

    Costa Rica trip help please

I’ve just started my two week trip to Costa Rica and I know I’m going to need a lot of help over the next two weeks. Bear with me as I’m an old world birder. My first photos are rubbish. Taken from my hotel window in San Jose. It should be a Baltimore oriole as it had an oriole’s bill. The...

Costa Rica family holiday - telescope or no telescope?

I’m about to head off on a two week family holiday visiting Tortuguero, Arenal Ob Lodge, Canó negro, Monteverde (specifically Curi Cancha) and Manuel Antonio. As I said it’s mainly a family holiday but I am taking time out at each site for some birding and have a couple of private guides lined...

Advice wanted for Savegre area. Upcoming trip in two weeks.

At the end of our two week trip to Costa Rica, we are staying in Manuel Antonio for a few days in April. My wife is taking my daughter on a rafting tour on the Savegre. I was wondering if it would be feasible to catch a ride on the tour bus and bird around the area on my own. We will already...

    Opticron mm3 focus wheel broken

I wonder if anyone has had this problem. I love my mm3, but yesterday as I was out on the field focusing on a surf scoter, the wheel focus started to feel loose. On further inspection I realised it was actually screwing away from the body. I tightened it up and everything was fine, I thought...

    Snipe - Northumberland (no photos)

I was driving on the A1 past Alnwick this morning, when a small snipe flew across the road at about 10m height in a direct flight. Clearly everything happened pretty quickly, but my initial thought was it looked bat-like before I saw it more clearly as a small snipe. Am I going crazy or is a...

When and why did we start birding?

As a young boy I remember my dad and aunt showed a passing interest in birds. An extremely heavy pair of binoculars were hung up by the back door and Peterson (below) lived in the glove compartment. The three pages I loved looking at were the ducks, the tits and of course the exotic page with...

Does less travel means less protection for wild sites?

More and more we hear of the damage that long haul flights are doing to the environment. I understand this argument but as birders we need to consider the possible ramifications. I fear that a lot of the “most in need of protection” bird reserves around the world will lose their protected status...
