Bunting ? Oulu River, Finland. June 2023

Can someone confirm this? Taken using phone camera on my work teambuilding trip to Oulu yesterday, w/central Finland, by the Oulu River about 20 km from the city. Eye stripe and thick beak were visible. Loads of other good birds around if I'd have had time to do any real birding....

    Perfect leaving present

We're all packed and about to leave Colombia to return to the UK after 20 months here. I've found a real joy in watching the hummingbirds coming to my balcony feeder. I regularly got visits from many individuals of 4 different species (and a 5th now and again), including Rufous-tailed...

Sorry for yet another poor shot of a tyrant flycatcher but there are lots of them here and they're hard! This was taken in open woodland at about 2200m, just east of Bucaramanga, Santander, Colombia. I didn't get any notes on this one as I was trying with the camera, but the red eye was very clear.

    Falcon, Santander Colombia

Bat or Orange-breasted Falcon? Taken in the mountains just east of Floridablanca, Santander, Colombia yesterday (photo taken by a friend). I guess we were about 1700m ASL. It was about 50m away and appeared larger than an American Kestrel but I know such impressions can be deceptive.

    Hoverfly with extremely long ovipositor

Can anyone provide any information about this hoverfly? I found in my bedroom here in Bucaramanga, Colombia (about 1000m ASL). I assume the long thing on it's abdomen is an ovipositor, but I've never seen anything so large compared to body size. Why would it need something so long?

    Hummingbird, Minca, Colombia

I've just spent a really good few days in NE Colombia; Tayrona, and the Santa Marta Mountains around Minca and the El Dorado reserve. There are quite a few warblers around here in Bucaramanga at the moment - Yellow, Black & White and Tennessee at least and I guess a few will be heading north soon. Can anyone recommend an audio guide to bird calls that includes specifically with flight calls of smaller European passerines - especially thrushes/chats, larks, buntings and finches? Scarce breeding bird publishing policy question

    Early in North Herts

Got up before sunrise this morning and was out in my local patch of farmland/small woods/old hedgerows. As I arrived in the car I disturbed a recently fledged Little Owl, but it was too dark for a photo. No mustelids, but plenty of hares and rabbits. An hour or so later (still before 6.00 AM!)...
