Feather ID, Scotland, Buzzard or Owl?

I found this feather yesterday by the roadside. Arable farmland with small woods. It struck me as a very broad feather. My guess from looking round the internet is common buzzard. Any views would be appreciated. Thanks, Laurence

Info wanted on White Stork, Blair Drummond

Today I was at Blair Drummond Safari Park near Stirling. I saw a white stork on the roof of the sea-lion house and presumed it 'belonged' to the park. However I couldn't make out any rings on its legs. I asked a guy from the birds of prey section and he said it wasn't the park's and had flown...

    Buzzard behaviour - being mobbed

My drive to work and back usually involves a sighting of a buzzard or two. In the last two days I have seen buzzards being mobbed by crows three times (likely involving 2 buzzards). Since I started this route in April, this is the first time I have seen any buzzards being mobbed. Why is this...

    New eyecups required

I have a pair of Nikon 8x30 EII binoculars that I bought about 6 or 7 years ago. They continue to be a brilliant binocular, but over the last year the rubber eyecups have hardened (I'm sure there's a technical term for this but I don't know it ...) and now they don't grip the eyepieces very well...

Amphibian call ID required - central Europe

I was in Slovakia last week and whilst birdwatching I heard a call which I had not heard before. It was a repetitive 'ho' sound, repeated at about 1 second intervals for about 30 seconds. It reminded me, sound-wise, of a hoopoe, but clearly wasn't. I thought it might be a little bittern, but...

    Flycatcher (?), Buenos Aires, Argentina

Taken by my non-birder friend in Costanera Sur, near Buenos Aires in the last week. I know it might be a long shot, but does anyone know what this is? A quick trawl through the internet has led me to suspect it is some kind of Tyrant or Flycatcher. Laurence

    Do kestrels hawk for insects?

I was in Lower Largo, Fife today, when I briefly saw a small falcon, in silhouette, without binoculars, for about 10-15 seconds. My initial thought was hobby, as it was gliding lazily along with its feet up to its head, as I've seen many hobby's do, and switching direction. As it seemed so small...

UK bird song ID - Lesser Redpoll?

Whilst out last night listening to the 'evening chorus' I heard a bird song that I was not familiar with. My first thought was that it sounded like a cross between a wood warbler and a meadow pipit. It was a trill that went up in frequency, but unlike wood warbler which I always consider to go...

    Thailand in May - weather?

Me and my non-birding (but very birdwatching tolerant) partner are thinking of going to Thailand in May, but have found conflicting reports on what the weather will probably be like. Some websites indicate heavy showers, whilst the Lonely Planet book seems to imply that May is the second wettest...

Changing Bird names which seem wrong

Would it make sense to change incorrect geographical bird names, such as Mediterranean Gull, Kentish Plover, Egyptian Vulture, all of which occur in much wider ranges? I suggest Black-hooded Gull, Snowy Plover (already the American name, I think), and White Vulture. Laurence Oops, just...

Seal kills auk. Is this common?

Whilst sea-watching (Firth of Forth) the other day I noticed an auk (not sure of species as distant) struggling in the water. As I got my scope on it I realised it was being dragged under. After a few seconds the predator revealed itself to be a seal (again, not sure which species!). It took a...

    How to eat butterflies...

Yesterday I saw a Stonechat catch a large moth and eat it in one go, wings and all. Further down the track I saw two Peacock butterfly wings lying seperately, which led me to thinking whether different bird species have different methods of eating butterflies and moths. Do some chop the wings...

Collins Guide - most useless pages...

Just for fun: Collins Guide to Birds of Britain and Europe, Pages 106-7 and 360-1. Does anyone find any other pages less useful than these ones! ;) Laurence

    Slovakia

Wishful thinking perhaps, but does anyone know any Wallcreeper sites in Slovakia. I'll be there for two weeks at the end of April, in the north-west of the country but able to travel.

    Scone Palace Hawfinches

I am thinking of going to Scone tomorrow. Does anyone have any tips on how to find the Hawfinches? Thanks in advance.
