Lack of hummingbirds in PA this year?

For the first time in my many years of watching numerous daily visits of ruby-throated hummingbirds to my yard, 2016 has definitely been different. The quantity of hummingbirds is way down so far this spring, and I don't recall anything like this in the past decade or so... Can anyone explain it?

    Wild Bird magazine ceases publication!

When I picked up my mail today, I got one of the few magazines that I eagerly look forward to: the September/October issue of Wild Bird. As I sorted through the rest of my mail, there was a post card from the publisher of Wild Bird saying that "due to increased printing and postal costs", they...

    Conowingo Dam -an FYI....

This is a virtually identical post I made on several other popular forums earlier today. I'm posting this info here as well because I know some of you, like me, will start to venture down there in the coming weeks and is geared to those of you who are familiar with the layout there. I drove...

    Camera lens vs telescope ?

Over six months ago, I thought I was going to purchase a Televue TV-85 for the purpose of photographing distant birds with my DSLR. At the time my longest camera lens was a 400mm. Through a series of fortunate events, I was able to purchase a Canon 500mm f4 lens and have been using it since for...

    Fluid head using Arca-Swiss system?

I originally posted this in the tripod section of the Scopes section but it makes more sense in this forum... Does anyone make a reasonably priced fluid head which uses an Arca-Swiss clamp? The head will be holding an Arca-Swiss rail mounted DSLR and long lens. I already own an excellent...

    Fluid Head using Arca-Swiss clamp?

Does anyone make a reasonably priced fluid head which uses an Arca-Swiss clamp? The head will be holding an Arca-Swiss rail mounted DSLR and long lens. I already own an excellent Mongoose gimbal head... what I'm looking for is something to give me more of a "damped" movement... in other words, I...

    TeleVue TV85 camera recommendation pls

It looks like I may be in a position to be able to purchase a TeleVue TV85 within a month or 2, primarily for digiscoping. But the TV85 is only part of the equation since I plan to purchase a camera which would be completely dedicated to the scope. I've been a Canon shooter for about 20 yrs and...

    VR or IS camera bodies?

Although I'm still planning on purchasing an astro scope for terrestrial photography (sometime in the next month or so), I'm curious as to whether it also makes some sense to invest in a camera body with VR (vibration reduction) or IS (image stabilization) built-in for specific use with the...

    "Astro" scope with smaller sensors?

I was just wondering if anyone has used an "astro" scope with smaller than an APS-C sensor (20D, 30D, 40D, 50D, 7D...). Like say perhaps with a Micro 4/3rds sensor as in a Panasonic G1? I would think that it would increase the magnification factor significantly given the increased angle of...

    HELP - Scopes and photography

I've been a photographer (amateur & professional) for about 40 years so I understand magnification and focal lengths and apertures. Recently I've seen some simply stunning bird images taken through spotting scopes and am thinking of adding a good scope to create images with. But I'm having the...

    Osprey activity?

Although I live near Philadelphia, I like to travel to the Forsythe NWR (Oceanville, north of Atlantic City) in the spring for osprey viewing. But sometimes making the almost 2 hr drive for me isn't convenient. Are there good sites for osprey viewing on the Delaware River? Thanks. Chris

When to start expecting Ospreys on the East coast?

Now that most of the over-wintering bald eagles have left PA, NJ and lower NY states, I'd like to keep my photography techniques current by photographing Ospreys. When should they start to show up in regular numbers on our lakes and rivers and shores? Any assistance would be helpful!

    Tripod head for scope question

I've been a photographer for over 35 years and so have several tripods and ball heads of various sizes to accommodate my photo gear which include DSLRs and a 400mm lens. I'll be purchasing a scope for digiscoping within the next few months, probably a Nikon 82ED, and although I know I can use...

    Need some help!

I originally posted this in another forum but realized that it probably belongs in this one: Although I've been a photographer for over 30 years, with many of those as a pro, I just recently learned about digiscoping and I'm eager to invest in some gear to get me started. I'm partial to Canon...

    Another newbie here...

Although I've been a photographer for over 30 years, with many of those as a pro, I just recently learned about digiscoping and I'm eager to invest in some gear to get me started. I'm partial to Canon (cameras at least since they do not appear to make scopes). I'd like to get a good scope to...

    Hello from PA

Thought this would be a good way to start off the new year! I live in the northern suburbs of Philadelphia, PA. My wife and I are bird enthusiasts but not hard-core birders, although we've developed a keen interest in raptors the past few years. I am a former professional commercial...
