    Damselfly Ohio, USA

Damselfly on the Little Miami River near the mouth of the Ohio. I recently obtained a book "Dragonflies and Damselflies of the East", but with zero experience identifying damselflies it isn't as easy as I thought it would be. Help. Jim

    Oregon Peregrine Age, Sex, Race?

An intruder displaying at a Peregrine nesting site at Yaquina Head, Newport, Oregon. After some discussion, the local Peregrine watchers were leaning towards a juvenile male. One point of confusion seemed to be yellow ceres and lores but plumage juvenile. Quite a show!

    Costa Rica Raptor

La Fortuna. A fellow birder from a recent trip to Costa Rica e-mailed me this photo. I increased brightness, contrast and saturation but didn't get much. I get a vibe for Laughing Falcon. Is there something definitive? Thank you, Jim

    camera and flash troubles.

I returned from a trip to Costa Rica last week. My camera gear gave me a little trouble: Speedlite got wet. An hour after the rain stopped, the flash made a POP and stopped working. Putting fresh batteries in, the flash still didn't work, but the batteries heat up nicely in case I want to start...

Costa Rica Caravan Tour Jan-Feb 11

My wife (not a birder) and I took a Caravan Tour of Costa Rica January 29 2011 – February 7 2011. We traveled a day early in case of airline delays. I spent the extra day birding the grounds at the Barcelo San Jose Palacio. I carried Garrigues’s The Birds of Costa Rica field guide. I checked...

I have several photos for ID that are giving me trouble. This first set are hummingbirds in Guanacaste last week. I think they all might be Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. Thank you, Jim

    Lightroom questions

I began shooting RAW images this month. I process the images in Lightroom 2.7. I notice that Lightroom applies initial adjustments to my RAW images: Temp - variable Tint - variable Brightness - 50+ Contrast - 25+ Sharpening - 25 Radius - 1.0 detail - 25 Noise reduction - Color 25 My Jpeg...

    Red-tailed Hawk

Canon 7D, 300 f2.8L IS + 1.4. ISO 1000, f5.0 1/2000 sec, +2/3 stop exposure compensation (I believe). I took several photos of this Red-tail, but all at the same camera settings - one of my presets. I'm not happy with the resolution. Would it have been better to reduce ISO or stop down? Is...

    Winter Birding Michigan U.P.

I'm considering the 10 hour drive from Kentucky to Sault Ste. Marie towards the end of January and stay for 3 or 4 days and drive and hike around. I'm hoping to find some life-list birds: Common Redpoll, Pine Grosbeak, Sharp-tailed Grouse, Boreal Chickadee, Bohemian Waxwing, Northern Hawk Owl...

    Bahamas Flycatcher

Photographed in March in Nassau, Bahamas. These 2 photos were taken a few minutes apart, but I'm assuming they are the same species, if not the same bird. Both my photos don't show the typical La Sagra's "leaning" posture. Also, my Birds of the West Indies guide doesn't describe the rufous...
