    Hummingbird, Michoacon, Mexico

Here's a hummer that has caused me lots of effort. The photo was taken at very long range, and is not that good, but one would think it would work for an ID. The crown feathers seem to be just getting started developing color, and thus are not reliable for identification. My best guess is the...

    Hawk, Big Bend (Texas), January

Here is a poor photo of a buteo. I think I have an ID on this one, but won't pejudice any input with my guess.

    brown warbler, NE Spain, May

A little nondescript warbler from Cañon de Río Lobos, Castil y Leon Province, Spain. Is it a Cetti's? The habitat was riparian. OOPs - forgot photo. I'll post a reply with the photo

What kind of Fairy-wren? SE Australia, March

This looks to be a Fairy-wren female. From my field guide I would instantly call it a Splendid, due to the bluish tail. However, all sources indicate that they do not occur in SE New South Wales, and I photographed this one about 100m from the beach in the Dalmeny area. eBird shows a few...

Strange plumage on Hummer, Nevada, USA

Hummingbird identification is quite simple at our feeder - there are basically two at this time of year: the Black-chinned and the Broad-tail. 90% are the former. I think this one is also a Black-chinned (female), but the plumage on the breast is very strange. Has anyone seen anything like...

Small streaky bird, strong conical bill, Cantabrian Mtns., Spain

This small bird is in the mountains of northern Spain, at elevation 1500m. I have some ideas, but nothing definite. The photo was taken May 8. I don't know if this is too early to consider juveniles in the higher elevations. Thanks in advance for any help.

    Moroccan desert Warbler, April

I would call this a female Spectacled, but it lacks the rufous panels on the back that I see in all references. The photo was taken close to Ouarzazate, Morocco, in a dry desert wash.

    Some type of Furnarid?

Some type of Furnariid? - Andes, NW Argentina Attached is a poor photo I took in a high (~3000m) dry, rocky arroyo in the northern Andes of Argentina (above Taffi del Valle). I believe it is a Furnariid, but I can't tie down the species. The main thing giving me trouble is the size and shape...

    Hybrid duck, Bay Area, California

The duck in the photo is clearly a hybrid (or my field guide is missing pages). Mallard seems obvious, but with what? I found him on a nest at Coyote Hills Regional Park.

    Small alpine bird, Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

The attached poor photos were captured from video. They are of a small, active, ground-dwelling bird and were taken at an elevation of 12,443ft (3800m.) on the southern slope of Kilimanjaro. The bird was very tame, and flitted close to the ground from rock to rock. We never saw him perch on a...

    Finch/Saltator/??? Argentina, Salta Province

I found this bird in the foothills at medium (~3000') elevation of NW Argentina. The area is forested and generally damp. The fence is for a pasture where there were domestic cattle. The streakiness of the plumage has me baffled. I suspect is it a juvenile of a common species. Thanks for...

Passerine, Chaco NP, far N. Argentina

I've just about worn out the field guide on this bird, and still have no clue. I found him in the warm lowland Chaco forest of Chaco National Park. Thanks in advance for any help.

Mutant Brown Jay??? (Alajuela, Costa Rica)

I caught this bird at considerable distance, thinking it was a Brown Jay (Cyanocorax morio). However, when I viewed the full-sized photo, I was dismayed at the shape of the bill. I can find no reference to any other species with the same field markings and an overhanging upper mandible like...

Another confusing Tyrant, Salta Province, Argentina

I'm thinking Pewee, perhaps Tropical, perhaps Greater, or perhaps something I haven't thought of. The field guides I have are all over the map on descriptions of the Tropical Pewee, particularly on the color of the belly. Some say "distinctly yellow", others "whitish". Habitat is important -...

Is this a Boat-billed flycatcher???? (Ibera Marshes, Argentina)

:hi:Greetings! The bill on this flycatcher is very long, and I can't reconcile it with the Great Kiskadee or anything else. However, the illustrations and photos I have of the Boat-billed flycatcher show a very wide and bulky bill on a bird almost without a forehead (the bill merges directly...

    Furnarid, Ibera Marshes, Argentina

Furnariid, Ibera Marshes, Argentina I had confidently ID'd this little bird as a Straight-billed Reedhaunter based on the field guide I had. However, when I check Opus, I find a photo of a bird with a very different bill. I think I need to spend some more money for more field guides, but I'll...

Mystery Raptor - Cordoba Province, Argentina

Here are some poor photos of a beautiful hawk. I've been through every raptor in my field guide and in Birdforum, and so far have come up short. This bird was in the Quebrada del Condorito, at around 2500m, just west of Cordoba, Argentina. The habitat is high, rocky grassland and scrubland...

Dove/Pigeon, Chancani Reserve west of Cordoba, Argentina

We've worked pretty hard on this one, but can't find anything in our sources that matches all the field marks (esp. eye color, undertail, and bill) I could list my guesses, but that would prejudice your deliberations. Thanks for any help in advance. The habitat was relatively dry Chaco...

    Raptor, N. Argentina, Chaco area

We are thinking perhaps an immature Cinereous Harrier, but with only this one frontal shot, can't commit. This was in the relatively dense woods of the Chaco National Park in the Chaco Province of Northern Argentina, which is in the lowlands (less than 300m). Thanks!

    Storm petrel (?), Antarctic Penisula

I took this poor photo at great distance from a ship near Palmer Station, Antarctica. I have several books, but can't seem to get congruence on all the field marks (notably leg length and head markings). Help from a southern pelagic expert would be appreciated, as this was my first visit...

    Shearwater ID, off Nicaragua

This shearwater has me puzzled (perhaps because it is the first one I've ever tried to ID) It landed on the deck of a ship off the coast of Nicaragua during the night. We helped it back to sea in the morning. Note the pale breast, fleshy feet, and dark bill. I've narrowed it down to a few...

    Spotted Barbtail photo for database

I posted a photo of the Spotted Barbtail (Premnoplex brunnescens) to Opus. There doesn't seem to be a photo in the database entry for this bird.

    New photo, Vermivora virginiae

Omniscient Moderators: I just posted a photo of Virginia's Warbler (Vermivora virginiae) to the Gallery (NA birds). I also put it in Opus, but would be proud and happy to have it also in the database. The current photo is a bit fuzzy. ;)

    More descriptive photo?

The photo I have for the Immaculate Antbird in Opus is more descriptive than the current one in the database, IMHO. I guess only the male appears in the database, clearly blatant sexism ;), but both are in Opus if this policy should ever change.

    Photo for database, Thryothorus nigricapillus

I just posted a (poor) photo for the Bay Wren in Opus. Again, it might be better than no photo, which is the current situation in the database.
