    Passage Feeding Frenzy?

Today was fabulous...........joining the normal array of finches, tits and thrushes were around 30 chiffchaffs, a male blackcap and a small group of spotted flycatchers. The unusual visitors were all feeding mainly on insects. Am I right in thinking this is a passage feeding group?

Red Kite between Swindon & Marlborough

I have seen Red Kites many times before, usually in Wales and occasionally in Oxfordshire, but this morning I saw the first one I can remember seeing in Wiltshire. It was circling over the Ridgeway south of Swindon and being tracked closely for quite a time by a Buzzard who clearly wasn't happy...

3 Winter visitors & one unusual passerby

Today we've been blessed with several Redwings, one Fieldfare, one Brambling and what appeared to be either a passing or an overwintering Ring Ouzel - browner than in summer but still with a distinct pale crescent across its chest. Do they overwinter? Steve B.

    Birds in Your Garden

I once read a guide on garden birds that said the typical British garden would attract between 5 and 50 species. I'm sure that many people who regularly visit this site, or who live in more exotic locations than the UK, can do better than 50. We moved house less than a year ago and we're...

Strange Tawny Owl box - help needed!

We have been given a tawny owl box as a gift but it is unlike others I've seen. Most tawny owl boxes seem to be like square tubes that you place on an appropriately angled branch......ours is a similar size but stands upright with a front opening. Will it work? Should it be fixed at a...

Where 2 go in september 2007?

Next September is a special birthday and I'd like to make it very special by going somewhere new and seeing a few birds that I've never seen before. I've done most of UK, a lot but not all of Europe, some of the US & Canada, some of Africa and Australasia. There are two other prerequisites -...
