The work on the new scrape and 5 hides at Musselburgh lagoons was completed yesterday and the new hides are now accessible. They are a bit bare just now but already the gulls, oystercatchers and few curlews using the site are using it as a high tide roost. David

    Malaga 5-12 August 2019

I have just returned from a week in Malaga, staying at the Barcelo Malaga. From outside the hotel the bus EMT Linea 5 took us to Guadalmar and the Paraje Natural de Descomburas de Guadalhorce. This is Malaga’s equivalent of Musselburgh Lagoons but with less birders and more birds, and slightly...

I thought I would post a report of a week’s holiday we had in Kefalonia from 8 May to 15 May 2019. We flew Jet2 from Edinburgh to Kefalonia, staying at the very welcoming Sotiris Studios in Svoronata, just south of the airport. On Kefalonia we travelled either by public bus, coach tour or on...

    Grey Squirrel disappearance East Lothian

From being very common in my locality, Tranent, the Grey Squirrels seem to have disappeared. There are no Pine Martens in East Lothian so the disappearance is a mystery. Could it be a disease? David

    Swans north of Peterborough

I was on the train to London yesterday morning and apart from a Red Kite north of Stamford the best birds were a flock of swans in a field beside the railway a few miles north of Peterborough. As I was on a train it was a brief view but they looked like Whoopers to me. Bird track has neither...

Just reaching the end of a great trip around quite a good part of this beautiful country. We flew from Edinburgh to Athens and then on to Thessalonica, going back the same way on Thursday. Western Rock Nuthatch, Sidirokastro

I just thought I would put up a note to give some information about the Rock Nuthatches at Sidirokastro in Central Macedonia in Greece. I saw a singing bird at the ice cream shop (now closed) site on 29 April 2015 but it took a lot of patience. It was singing from a rock ledge to the left and...

    Lightweight tripod recommendations

I am planning to go on a budget airline trip next year and want to take my telescope. I normally use a Slik D2 which is not that heavy but won't fit in my hand luggage and will add to the weight in any checked in bag. So does anyone have a recommendation for a lightweight tripod which may fit...

    Freezing Fog Bonus

I had to go to London this week for a meeting and my flight from Edinburgh was delayed because of freezing fog at London City so I got the train down yesterday. I don't know why I don't do this more often when I travel to London as there are quite a few good birds which were seen as we...
