    November 2012

Just thought I might start a new thread to see if the rest of Gwent is still here. Any waxwings yet?

    ID Coba in Mexico

Found this on a holiday snap at the Mayan ruins at Coba, Mexico, about 40km inland. Anyone know what it may be?

    Mullein?

Trapped this last night, but I am unsure whether it's a Mullein because of its size and lack of darker markings. Any suggestions?

    RSPB Reserve, Conwy

Just thought I would mention how much we enjoyed a trip to Conwy which included three visits to the RSPB reserve. It was a bit quiet there, but I imagine the high winds put the birds into shelter! Visitor centre and coffee shop staff were cheery and very helpful. Volunteers were numerous...

Juniper Pug... but far too early?

Trapped this Juniper Pug last night and I'm not confident in the ID, because it's too early. I'm sure it's not Oak-tree pug. Wing span is 23.5 mm. Any ideas?

    Moth ID

Trapped this near Chepstow, South Wales on Saturday. Spent ages looking through the books and can't find it. Any ideas?

    Manfrotto 055XPROB

I'm thinking of buying the Manfrotto 055XPROB because I want a full height tripod for scoping, but like the horizontal arm for low macro photo work. Any opinions welcome, including a multi use head or places to buy, before I spend the Christmas money. Thanks

    Pentacon 8x42WPR

Any body got an comments about the Pentacon 8x42WPR waterproof roof prism binocular. http://www.scopesnskies.com/prod/praktica/birding/binoculars/corvette/8x42-roof.html Seems an excellent buy, but I would need to order them to try them out and I don't want to take the risk of the return...

    Another Fungus ID?

Found this growing from an old scotts pine stump, in mixed woodland, next to our garden. The biggest is 10cm tall and 10cm round, it has a bright orange colour and it all appeared in a couple of days. I can't find it in any ID website, so good luck.;)

    Sigma 17-70 DC MACRO

Ok, so it's not your normal birding glass, but has anyone any experience with the Sigma 17-70 DC Macro. I looking for an alternative to the standard Canon kit lens and the close focusing may be a bonus in other nature shots, flowers, bugs and the like.

    Waunafon Bog

Excellent place for short eared owls, snipe and very bemused horses. Stay in the car and the SEOs fly around and over you, quartering and dropping into the long grass after voles and mice. Wildlife programme standard images stay with you.

    Starlings, millions of them?

Driving through West Wales, my wife and I had to stop the car on the A40 near Slebech (west of Narbeth) to watch untold tens of thousands of starlings heading for a roost. Looking straight up, they filled your field of view and the vast numbers of birds filling the sky were all travelling in the...

    30D prices

Looks like the 30D is still dropping in price with shopping4cameras.com offering a body only for £758.02. http://www.shopping4cameras.com/products/details.cfm?PRODUCT=CANEOS30D&refer=klk&tduid=50960b83c23a722c778410177d83bbc0 I was just wondering if anyone had spotted other Canon bargains out...

I've been searching for a beanbag, but can't believe how expensive they are. Can anyone suggest the best place to buy one?

    Young birds out and about.

Sunday: Spent a pleasant afternoon fishing, accompanied by 4 little grebe chicks(fluffy humbugs), 10 mallard ducklings and group of 5 greater spotted woodpeckers. Moorhens and coots squabbling. Usual robin, song and mistle thrushes, blackbirds and chaffinches, all in good song. The woodpeckers...

Why are digital SLRs so expensive

I've been using a Canon 30 for years. Its a real trustworthy tool for portraits and general shots and now birds. Why then is the new 30D 3 times the price. What's so expensive inside?

    Sensitive species listings

Lots of talk and threads about not posting sightings during the breeding season for sensitive species; waders, raptors, wildfowl, etc. Some regional societies and county recorders must have lists of birds they want members not to report on. I was wondering if this needs to be adopted by all...

    Swallow and barn owl

Having spent two and a half hours looking for our usual SE Owls and merlins without success (mipits, wheatears, kestrel and my first swallow for the year, instead), I got home sat in front of the computer, glanced outside and saw a barn owl glide across the neighbours gardens and disappear...

    Jackdaw numbers increasing?

There have been many bigger jackdaw roosts around our area this year. Bigger than past years. Whilst waiting in the car, I watched 300-400 birds circling above the main town and gathering in trees next to a club. Another 300+ above an area called Cambridge Gardens. Gwent OS members report see...

    Seen any good scraps lately?

BF member Luke and I have been watching a short eared owl battling a merlin (or maybe the other way round?) for a meal. It came to blows and got higher and higher. 250 feet or more it carried on, until the birds must have either chickened out, or had a nose bleed. Half and hour later, a...

    Alternative sources

I was wondering if people often source their clothing (and other equipment) from retailers that specialise in other sports and hobbies. I flyfish and use fleeces, waterproofs and boots in may different guises, and buy my stuff from catalogues from flyfishing suppliers. This, of course means I...

    Short Eared Owls and Merlin

2 SE Owls followed between 4.45 and 5.45 near the Tredegar and Rumney Golf Club entrance. Pairing squabbling high up and calling, 15m from the the road and car. One bird disappeared over the moorland shortly afterwards. The other perched on a post south of the road for 10 mins. Also merlin...

    Merlin

Spent the afternoon looking for 3 short-eared owls spotted recently on open moorland between Tredegar and Rumney in the South Wales Valleys. However, we were surprised when a male merlin flew out of the grass and perched 100m away on a post before disappearing over a ridge. Nice. We left at...

    Greetings

Avid bird watcher since i was young. My nephew luke has re-awakened my interest. During the last few months I've been watching everything local; short eared owls, red kite, buzzard, goshawk and peregrine falcon. Trips spotting black necked grebe, little egret, dabchick, goldeneye kestrel and...
