Tripod and head for a D500 and 500mm f5.6 lens

I have changed from a Canon 1dx and 500mm f4 lens to a Nikon D500 and the new PF 500mm f5.6 lens, considerably lighter to carry around. The weight of the camera and lens is only 2.2 Km. I need a tripod with a gimbal head for bird photography. Thought about a Wimberley Sidekick with a good...

    Canon 1.4x converter compatibility

I have sold my converter to a guy with a 70-200mm f4 lens and it fails to autofocus when used with either a 450D or a 40D camera. I find this strange since I know it worked fine on my 500mm f4. Is there a compatibilty issue with this lens/ camera combination when using the 1.4x converter?

    Possible Reed Warbler

I posted these two photographs of a bird seen at South Gare on the Teesmouth Bird Club website suspecting Reed Warbler. Some questions were raised about the possibility of it being a Marsh warbler, maybe immature. The photos were taken in very poor light so I don't think the brownish colour of...

Dynamic range of Canon and Nikon DSLR

For some time I've been comparing images of birds that appear on the web taken by cameras from both companies such as the D300 and 1d MkIII. The conclusion I'm coming to is that the dynamic range of the Nikon cameras is greater than Canon. Images from Nikon appear to show more detail in both...

    Bird ID

My nephew in Holland has photographed a bird in his garden and isn't sure of it's identity. There appears to be white edges to the flight feathers as in linnets but doesn't look like a linnet overall. Could it be a fledgling? Any help would be appreciated.

    Marsh Harriers at Blacktoft Sands

I had a fruitful visit to RSPB Blacktoft Sands last week to see Marsh Harriers. Although the visibility on the day was poor because of mist and fog I did get great views of the breeding Harriers there. A breeding pair appears to have a nest site directly in front of the Singleton Hide and the...

    Binoculars for young children

I have a 6 year old grandson who is a keen bird watcher and I would like to buy him his own bins. I have no idea what to buy! He has used my old Carl Zeiss Deltrintems but I think even these are a little heavy for him. Would appreciate any advice.

    Otters on Mull

Was lucky enough to see lots of otters in the bay at Craignure on Mull. They were present for the whole week and I got lots of shots of them feeding on crabs and resting on the shore. Two pics attached.

    Barn Owls in Norfolk

We are off to Norfolk next week for a few days and would love to see and hopefully photograph barn owls. We will be staying near Fakenham and wondered if any of the locals could recommend the best locations.

    Re-sizing a raw file

I want to send a Canon .CR2 raw file from my 1dmkIII by e-mail but it is too big at 12.9mb. Is it possible, for example to resize it from 3888 x 2592 to, say 1600 x 1200 using Photoshop CS2, Breezebrowser or DPP. I don't want to open and convert to a Tiff as normal. Is this a daft question to...

    Curlew or whimbrel

Wondered if any of you experts could identify this bird. I think the bill is too short for a curlew. Am I right?

    Geese at Caerlaverock

We are off to Southwest Scotland for hols at end of September. Will we be too early to see the over-wintering geese arrive? Could anybody recommend a touring caravan site in that area please?

    Lens for Canon MkIII

I'm upgrading from a Canon 20D with a 17-85mm IS lens to a Canon 1d MkIII and wonder which "utility" lens I should get. I have long focal length lenses for bird photography and would use the "utility" lens, probably a zoom, for landscape, portrait, family, etc. Any recommendations?

    Birding in Northwest Wales

I'm going to LLanystumwy near Cricceith for 7 days next week and wondered if any locals could recommend any worthwhile birding locations. I already know of the Glaslyn ospreys. Thanks, Renton

    New member and Marsh harrier

Hi to all. I've developed an interest in bird photography and have a recent photo that people may wish to comment on. The attached shot was taken at Minsmere from the Bittern hide. The harrier had just taken a young coot from the pond in front of the hide. Light was poor so quality not the best...
