iBird Pro (North America + Hawaii)

Version 1.0.0 is now available for Android through the App Market. For the non-iPhone hardcore birder, this app rates two thumbs, 8 fingers, and 10 toes up! It's kinda nice to now have Phone, GPS, and a multimedia Field Guide combined in one small device... An excellent review is HERE, and the...

    You guys...

should be ashamed of yourselves! Because of the reports/reviews/photos I've seen from some of you, I was just forced to order a new EF 100-400 IS. Shame, I tell you, SHAME! (And thanks ;) )

    Previewing images in the field

I just purchased 2 new products for a little "experiment" with previewing images in the field. The first product is the CIDA2 SD/MMC card to CompactFlash Adapter from PSI. The second product is GrxView from InDev Software. GrxView is an image viewer which allows direct access to images on a...

Today was not a good birding day... but it was excellent for reptiles and amphibians! Will someone ID this one for me, please? Thanks, GR

    Critters and Suet Feeders

OK Guys and Gals, Does anybody know what critters besides birds like suet feeders? For 3 of the past 4 days, I've refilled my hanging suet feeder with woodpecker bars and suet cakes, only to wake up the next morning and find that it's been raided. In two of those instances the feeder was...

    Sparrow behavior

I'm paying more attention now to what birds actually DO, as opposed to just what the bird actually IS. So, here's a question: The sparrows in my back yard have started hovering about 12" off the ground, just above the dandelion stalks, then land for a few seconds, then take off and hover some...

    Birding Missouri

My wife's folks live in Doniphan, and we're planning a two or three day visit in a couple of weeks. Should I also plan a trip to Mingo while we're in the neighborhood, or wait until later in the year? GR, In neighboring KY

    American Robin Nest Cam

Yippee! Mama Robin has made her first appearance at the nest today, and is busy getting it ready for the little ones to be. This is the fourth year that she'll nest in the same spot, and this time we can kick back in the den and watch nature at work thanks to that little ccd camera I managed...

    Bird(er) rehab

A short while back this thread (http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=13735) discussed birding with disabilities. After coronary bypass surgery last week, suddenly I'm a birder who can't hike, can't drive, and can't even pick up a tripod/scope/camera for at least 6 weeks. Anybody have any...

    ID, please?

This little critter was taking a good soaking from the wind and rain when I snapped this pic... I know he's not happy, but what IS he? Thanks, GR

    Ah, Spring!

It's close to Spring! The birds are back, the flowers are blooming, and the squirrels are... Well, I've held off on posting these pics for 2 weeks now, but the "before and later" shots are just too funny not to! Captions, anyone? My first thought is "Wild Life" and "What have I done?"

Beginning birder, sorta-beginning photographer, beginning 'scoper... will you ID this bird for me, please? Thanks, GR

    Focus in Macro Mode

Sometimes while using macro focus through my scope, the autofocus seems to just go crazy; the lens mechanism seems like it moves all the way in, back out, and then to some place in between to where I have to refocus the scope again. Problem with the camera, or just a quirk? Regards, GR

    CP4500 vignetting

I've just purchased a CP4500, and my initial reaction is that the vignetting is much more severe than with my old camera (Toshiba PDR-4300). However, I like the CP4500's ability to do things that my old camera won't do. Can somebody post a pic of the vignetting as seen through the 4500 w/ no...

And yet another raptor for ID...

Photographed while eagle-watching in LBL National Recreation Area. The nest I was watching was empty, but when I turned around to survey my surroundings, this little cutie showed up in a tree behind me. ID for this newbie, please?

    SE Missouri Raptors

There's a stretch of Highway US60 between Sikeston and Poplar Bluff, Missouri that is absolutely astounding for viewing Raptors. The land is flat and is primarily used for growing cotton. Trees are few and far between. It's not unusual to see Birds of Prey perched on roadsigns, posts, and...

    CP4500 Monitor Hood

Found this while browsing this morning; the price looks a bit steep, and there's no magnification, but for all you CP4500 users, here it is: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/product/257199/NIHLCP4500/REG/4968 Regards, GR

    Camera Focus

I've had a problem with focus on the last two outings... It seems that even though the scope appears to be focused correctly, all the photos I take come out blurred. I've thought everything from conditions, to camera, to my eyesight not being 20/20 through my eyeglasses. Today I spent some time...

    Critique and suggestions, please

This dove was shot in the late evening, using a Zeiss 85T*FL and a Toshiba PDR-4300, from a distance of about 30 yards. The image has been cropped and mildly sharpened in Photoshop 7. As a beginner not only with 'scopes but also with photography in general, I'd appreciate all the help and...

    Toshiba PDR-4300

Looks like the PDR-4300 (4 mp) is going to work out well for 'scoping. Using it with my home-brewed adapter and the Zeiss 85mm scope (20-60 zoom eyepiece), vignetting is almost nil at no camera zoom/20x on the scope. At approx. 5-10% camera zoom, vignetting totally disappears. So far I have...

    "Rube Goldberg" scope adapter

For those who prefer an adapter so you can swing the camera out of the way, I've built an adapter that includes a Panavise cellular phone mount, an aluminum rod, a rubber grommet, and a foam foregrip from a fishing rod. If anybody's interested in the details for this monstrosity, please email me.

    Davis and Sanford

New guy here, been lurking a while... As we say in my part of the States, 'Howdy, ya'll!!" Has anybody used/have an opinion on the Davis and Sanford tripods by Tiffen? I've looked at the Provista model with the F12 fluid head for use with an 80mm scope, and would like some opinions. Thanks, GR
