    Tree sparrows at Worfield bog

Anyone know if still around. Been a few years since last visited and saw several around the farm. Went last week or so and none, just house sparrows. Also the bog is just a tiny puddle through lack of rain. May be up a little since though.

    Mixed news

Last year saw my garden common frogs making a bit of a recovery. Unfortunately the half a dozen dead ones I fished out the pond a month ago seems to have wiped them put. The harshest weather for a century. But I have already had smooth newts, last year had to wait until April 8 to see my first...

    Unusual goldfinch?

I saw a pair of golfinches yesterday, one of them had no red at all on the head. I have never seen this before, is it usual? Anyone else ever encountered it? Apart from the lack of red it was perfect in every other way.

    How did your March go?

I had a geat start, when on the 2nd saw a female goshawk locally - in fact all my birding was local anyway, mostly within a 5 mile radius. On the odd occasion I was found straying a little further, but still in the South Staffordshire area. First birds of the year seen during the month -...

    How did your February go?

A good start to the month with a local firecrest seen on February 1. Also regular sightings of the Baggeridge water rail throughout the month. Up to 76 species for the year by the end of the month, adding firecrest, snipe, tree creeper, shoveler and siskin. As a local birder (and living in the...

    How did your January go?

I intend to ask this question every month this year, so it will be a thread where you can recap on the month's birding, the highlights, the lows and so on. So, how did you get on?

    Rough-legged buzzard - Staffordshire

What is the situation with rough-legged buzzards this winter? ie are we getting many visit the UK? And where have the sightings been? The reason I ask is that today I saw what I noted in my book as a 'possible' sighting of a bird on the southern fringes of Cannock Chase in Staffordshire. The...

    Have you ever named birds?

Have you ever got so attached to a bird that you have considered giving it a name? :eek!: Round the corner from where I live are a pair of common buzzards that I regularly watch. I have become quite fond of them and today thought I ought to give them a name. :bounce: Molineux, Bully, Sir...

    Crane in Staffordshire

Yesterday I was more than surprised to see a crane in soaring flight in the Stafford area heading in a E/SE direction. Although it is the first I have seen, I knew what it was as soon as I got the binoculars on it. I also had good views and so am absolutely certain of id. Not being an expert I...

    Best June bird

Now that we are into July, what was your 'best' bird for last month? It doesn't have to be a rarity, perhaps just a personal reason why you went for it. Mine was a pair of stonechat feeding two juveniles on Highgate Common in South Staffordshire. I spent ages watching them - brilliant!

    Best May bird?

In line with the respective threads I've started for each month, your best bird doesn't have to be a rarity, maybe just something special to you. Mine was a black necked grebe on Sheepwash Urban Park in the heart of the Black Country. Good view as well, really thrilled at that one.

    Best April bird

What was your best bird for April? Doesn't have to be a rarity, could be a common bird, just that it means something special to you. Mine was definitely a long eared owl seen at Sandwell Valley RSPB. Brilliant!

    Late fieldfare

It's been a good few weeks since I saw a fieldfare, but today saw a bird in South Staffs. It was odd watching it literally next to a wheatear. Anyone else got fieldfare around?

    Late redwing / fieldfare

I hadn't seen a redwing for a few weeks thought they'd all gone from the area, but then on April 13 spotted a single bird. (I am in Staffordshire). Are redwing still around in your area? What about fieldfare?

    Best March bird

What was your best March bird and why? It doesn't have to be a rarity, perhaps some other reason why you chose it.

    Deceived by your eyes?

Have you ever been deceived into thinking you've seen something when in fact it wasn't? Today I spotted a heron like bird alongside a hedge. It was a grey bird with a white crest and a green patch on the neck. It was fanning its wings cormorant style. Excited about my rarity, I moved along...

    First summer bird

Of particular interest in the UK, but have you seen you first summer species yet? Saw mine today - two willow warblers. They were individual birds, both within 400 metres or so of each other right at the start of the session. But a reminder that it's the cross-over period, also spotted a...

    Best February bird

What was your best bird for the month and why? It doesn't have to be a rarity, maybe a very common bird, but the circumstances made it special.

If there is one bird that you could see...

...what would it be? I'm thinking more of my own backyward birding and in particular what I have seen this year so far, and what I haven't. But your answer can be based on any criteria that you like. The question came to mind today when I was out birding and I thought to myself that I would...

    Best January bird

What was your best bird for the month of January? It doesn't have to be a particularly rare bird, in fact it could be a very common one, just that the circumstances surrounding it are special. Mine was firecrest seen in a local wood. It was my first sighting of the species (I am definitely a...

    Are you a slow mover?

Having both a pedometer and a watch with me when birding, I know how much ground I cover and how quickly. Obviously terrain is important but I am talkinag about typical local woods, hedges, fields etc. I do about 1 mile per hour. Are you a fast operator or a slow mover like me?

    In and around South Staffordshire.

What better way to start the New Year than with a bird watching session? Visited Baggeridge Country Park and with a reasonably mild and definitely dry day forecast, everything looked good for the first trip of the year. Hoping that it was a good omen for the year, the moment I stepped foot in...
