Glaucous or Iceland Gull? NE Scotland

I struggle to separate these two, but I think this one is a Glaucous. Am I right? And what age please?

Butterfly and Moth from NE Scotland

I'd be grateful for an ID of these two, both taken yesterday, the butterfly in a recently clearfelled pinewood and the moth in mature pine/birch woodland. The butterfly was maybe slightly smaller than a Ringlet, and I wasn't able to get a look at the underwing.

    New Award Winning Camera Straps

An advert in the current issue of Outdoor Photography caught my eye. It is for a camera strap which basically goes over the left shoulder with the camera hanging on your hip. It appeals to me because I don't like the weight of a camera and heavy lens hanging round my neck when I'm walking...

Thank You Norfolk for a Great Week

I spent last week in Norfolk, 6 twelve hour days of solid birding. The main idea was to look for species that are rare or don't occur in my native Aberdeenshire, but also to give my lists a bit of a boost. I managed a total of 113 species, including 7 lifers and 35 for the year list. This was...

    Curlew or Whimbrel? NE Scotland

I'm not entirely convinced this is a Whimbrel, what do you think? Taken yesterday in heavy rain at a range of about 100m and heavily cropped, hence the lousy photos. The bird was clearly smaller than adjacent Curlews, the bill looks OK, as do the short legs, but I'd like to see a better defined...

    7D and PSE8

I have just set up my new 7D and taken a few shots. Photoshop Elements 8 doesn't seem to recognise the files. So what do I need to do? Please keep it simple, I'm no expert ;)

Going it alone or in company

Apologies if this has been done before, but I can't find any previous thread on the subject. Do you go birding on your own, or do you prefer to have company? What are the advantages and disadvantages of either? Do you like organised trips with lots of people? Are you happiest on your own...

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

Enough dithering. The consultation period is past. Thanks for your suggestions for a thread title. I was rather hoping somebody else would take it on, but never mind, I'll do it. I've gone for what is possibly the longest title in the sub-forum, more creative than functional. Thanks also to...

    Ruddy Shelducks, Montrose, Scotland

These two have been around on Montrose Basin for a week or so. Probably escapes I know, but I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on their sex/age etc. Sorry for the poor photo (long range), it doesn't do them justice.

    ID please, Treshnish Isles, Hebrides

found this on a rock face on Lunga, one of the Treshnish Isles, off Mull, UK.

    Isle of Mull, 13th - 20th June 2009.

This report is also on my new website, with some photos added to the Birds Gallery. Feel free to get in touch if you want more information about places to stay and things to do on MUll. Isle of Mull, 13th – 20th June 2009. We stayed in a beautifully appointed timber lodge (imported direct...

    A Week on Islay

I spent last week (28th March - 4th April) on the island of Islay, one of the Inner Hebrides off the west coast of Scotland. It was my third visit to the island in the last 10 years, so I had the advantage of knowing my way around fairly well. I was staying in an excellent self catering...

    White Wagtail (male) UK

Is this a White Wagtail showing territorial behaviour? How unusual is this in the UK (Aberdeenshire)? http://www.thenatureofnescotland.com/videos.htm

Iceland or Glaucous Gull? Angus, UK

Is it possible to say from this very long (500 metres away) shot which it is? I know both have been recorded at this site recently. Thanks in advance. Ken

    Another white-winged gull, Peterhead UK

I think this one might be easier, although I don't have much experience of Iceland or Glaucous Gulls. I have it down as an Iceland, based on head shape, relatively narrow bill and more "gentle" appearance. Sorry I couldn't get any closer, also it was raining quite heavily, so not the best photo.

    Desert Wheatear, UK ?

Fingers crossed this is a Desert Wheatear. If you reckon it is, what sex/age would it be? Thanks in advance.

Grebes. Little or something else? UK

These grebes looked bigger than others that were obviously Little Grebes, and they had red eyes. I'm wondering if they are Slavonian Grebes (Horned Grebes). Seen today on Montrose Basin, Angus.

    A Week in North Norfolk

Last week, I had a great time in Norfolk. Many thanks to all the friendly and helpful birders I met. I didn't manage to do all I had planned, so I'll just have to go back next year. My trip to Norfolk started after teatime on Friday 26th September. I simply drove south until I began to feel...

    Flycatcher, Scotland east coast

Am I right in thinking this is a Spotted Flycatcher? Yesterday near Arbroath.

    Golden Plover, NE Scotland

Some very distant shots of a GP taken today on the Ythan estuary. Sorry for the poor quality. Any opinions on european or pacific? It was the only one present which seemed a bit odd.

Birdguides DVD video guide to British Birds problem

I have very recently bough my first DVD player, and a copy of Birdguides DVD Guide to British Birds. The DVD plays OK on my PC, but on the DVD player both the sound and the pictures are erratic, with short gaps most noticeable in the commentary. Other DVDs play OK, so I don't think it is the...

    Ringed Plover or LRP. UK

I'm not familiar with LRPs and I'm hoping this is one. It seems to be a juvenile bird of one or the other species, not an adult Ringed Plover (no orange on bill). Photos were taken yesterday at long range, sorry they aren't clearer. Not seen in flight. I was reliably informed there was a pair...

    Wood Warbler, NE Scotland

I'm hoping this is a Wood Warbler (a lifer if it is, they are not too common here). Taken today in mature oak/birch woodland at Ballater. A lucky shot, I think!

    Whitethroat, Common or Lesser? UK

    Today at Girdleness, Aberdeen. thanks.

    Raptors (?) in Eastern Scotland

There were two of these soaring very high above the Angus hills, apparently a pair. I'm puzzled by the white at the base of the tail. They seemed to be a lot smaller than the Buzzards that were also in the area. Sorry for the poor IQ, they were barely visible to the naked eye.
