    Herring Gulls eating apples

Noticed this for the first time this autumn. Anybody else see 'em doin' it? Usually they peck at the ones on the ground but sometimes take off with an apple in their bill, taking the pith. Probably trying to grab 'em quick before the windfall tax! Gerry

    My Great Question.

Arctic terns spend summer (Northern Hemisphere) in the Arctic doing their Breeding 'n Feeding during the long hours of daylight. Then they fly down to Antartica for another Summer during our Northern Hemisphere Winter. Do they breed there as well? I presume they do coz of the amount of...

    Suprising Sparrowhawk behaviour

I got a shock this morning when I walked out the back door to see a Sparrowhawk floating in the pond.See Attached pic. It was struggling with something in his talons, the struggling stopped and it emerged from the pond carrying a large rat. It was too heavy for it to lift over the hedge so it...

    Raptor ?

I'm confused by the defenition of 'Raptor', what is and what isn't a raptor? It's got to be something to do with hooked beak, claws, live prey and a few other criteria that I think of at the moment. So where does a Peregrine stop and a Parrot begin? Or an Osprey fade and a Merganser start? Any...

    Late Dragonfly

G'Day All, We had some sunshine down here in Devon today so I jumped on the bike for an hour or so. Why Butterflies?

G'Day All, One of the most common questions I'm asked in my Professional capacity as 'Play Assistant' is "Why are Butterflies called Butterflies?" My usual answer is that the first species seen in spring is Brimstone which is a perfect butter yellow so the name sticks. Most of the little ones...

G'Day All, I've never had much luck Seawatching but tomorrow the weather looks good. Strong Southerlies with rain , then clearing. Scarecrows

Driving past a nearby field I was shocked to see a dead Crow strung up between two poles. The farmer often ties empty bags or bits of plastic to the poles in an attempt to scare the Pigeons away from the crops but I've never seen a dead Crow used in this way.It appeared similar to a Gamekeepers...
