    Tree goose

North Lincolnshire UK. April 2024. My wife spotted a goose flying into trees from quite a distance. I was a little skeptical but sure enough a perched goose bottom, high in a Scots pine. Aware this is not uncommon in Canada geese in Canada and there have been reports of greylag perching in...

    OM-1 with Olympus M.Zuiko 150 x 400mm TC Pro

Raided my savings and part-exchanged my Zuiko 300mm Pro for the 150 - 400mm. Still squirming with guilt over £6799. Here’s a (very) brief amateur review. Much more comprehensive reviews are widely available. This is aimed at those who are put off by the price. Build quality is excellent. It...

    Bino vs Scope

Hope I'm not exercising an old and tired debate, but if you only had the cash for a good scope or bins which would you opt for? My hobby is painting birds. Over the years I have relied on my own photography for reference. I recently indulged in a used Canon 500mm IS F4 for use in hides, to reach...

White tailed lapwing continues to show well at RSPB Blacktoft Sands

Delicate plover with very long legs. As always with loan vagrants looks lost and out of place but warm weather continues to provide insects. Wonder if this is a Russian bird? Will it continue migration and rejoin its original flyway South East to the Middle East or North Africa.

    What is feeding this cuckoo.

Can someone help identify what is feeding this cuckoo please? I would guess reed warbler, but wondered if anyone could glean enough from this very poor picture to pin down the foster parent? I tried to get a good line of sight on the action but the cuckoo obscured the other bird. I was anxious...

    Juvenile kingfisher

Slow day in a hide on my local patch, scratching mozzie bites and watching squabbling coots. Suddenly this little fella zipped in and landed on a pole at the edge of the lake. Managed to get a few shots and used these as a basis for this watercolour.

    New to birding abroad

Grateful for the thoughts of experienced oversea birders. My main interest is photographing birds in order to paint them in watercolour. I have travelled around the UK and now, newly retired, hope to collect images of overseas birds for painting on rainy English days. While I'm happy to expand...

    Wood carving

Usually carve marine mammals but also enjoy sketching birds from life. Thought I'd have a go at carving with minimal detail, to convey a bird as a sketch in wood (hope that makes sense). Hope you can i.d. it (European birders) if not I'm going to stick to humpback whales|=)|
