    My new used d5

There's quite a few used d5 on the market now and I got a deal on a < 20k shutter count one in great condition. Wow, this is a great camera! I wanted something to compliment the d850. I can use the same batteries in them (the EN-EL18 series) which is a big plus. The d5 focuses so well and...

    Nikon back button AF

I have never been a fan of BBAF, but I was just watching a video by Mark Smith about the d850 and he pointed out an option I had glossed over before. It is possible to assign a button that sets both AF-ON and your AF points (single, 3d, 9, 25, etc.). He sets PV1 (on the front) to AF-ON +...

    A7RIV first contact

I was able to get my hands on an A7RIV with the 400mm f/2.8, and the 1.4x and 2x TCs. Here's some initial thoughts on the camera. I've used it for only an hour or two so far and just in one spot I go to. I'll report back some more over the week as I use it more before I have to part with it...

    A7RIV needs high-end glass

Lloyd Chambers has a post today about finding lenses that are up to the 61MP challenge of the A7RIV. I've noticed something similar with the d850, to a lesser extent. I cannot use my old 800mm f/5.6 AI-s with it. Results just look poor. It needs a lower resolution camera. The d500 and...

Tripod head: anti-slip pin & anti-rotation pin explained

I had someone ask me in a PM about these things, so I thought I would explain it here with a few photos. Some fluid heads will accept a standard quick release plate called an Arca Swiss (or just Arca at times). These slide through a vice-like clamp that holds them in place. If the clamp is...

    New Nikon 300mm f/2.8 is a zoom!

Announced with the d6 is a 120-300mm f/2.8E FL. Hopefully we'll see some big weight savings. The venerable 300mm f/2.8G has been around for a long time at 6.4 lb / 2900 g. The current (oldish) Canon is 5.3 lb / 2.4 kg, so hopefully Nikon will drop like 2 lb / 1kg. Marc

    Sony A9II rumors

Latest rumor has it at 33 - 36 MP. I think that's a good resolution -- still allows some non-diffraction higher f-stops (maybe f/11?) and probably some pretty clean higher ISOs. Going by the 5dM4, probably good out to 6400 - 12,800 with very low noise...

    Burrowing Owls

I have heard that there are some fields up at UC Santa Cruz, California, that have burrowing owls. Can anyone offer advice about how to spot the little guys, such as time of day or tell-tail signs to look for? Marc

    Comparisons for Monarch 60ED?

There's the glowing review for the 82ED, but I wonder how the current Monarch 60ED stacks up against the competition (MM4/60, ATS65HD, TSN601, TSN663, etc.). There's an old thread asking the same thing, but it never got a reply. Personally, I like the MM4/60 as it is so tiny it literally fits...

Nikon rumors/announcements for July pretty depressing

If you look at Nikon rumors website and filter out all the junk about lens caps, tripods, photo editing software and such, here is the list of things specifically from Nikon. It is pretty depressing, it is all about discounts, refurbished, and price drops. The one exciting one about the Z8 is...

White-nose syndrome fungus found in California

https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/Conservation/Laboratories/Wildlife-Investigations/Monitoring/WNS The fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans was found in northern California. I heard that it takes 1-3 years from the time of detection to first showing up in bat populations. If it spreads to the...

Bird ID Santa Cruz, CA (June)

Can't say I have any idea what this guy is. He's on a bush about 20m from a cliff down to the ocean. The two photos are the same bird with different cameras (a6400 and d850) taken back-to-back. TIA

    d5-equivalent mirrorless rumors

Nikon Rumors has a posting that the Nikon CEO confirms there will be a D5-equivalent mirrorless, unknown timeline. Earlier NR thought it would be sometime in 2020. I assume it will be after the D6 upgrade for the Olympics. Marc

Rumors of new Sony 500/4 or 600/4 or 200-600 zoom

Sony to announce new wildlife/sport lens. This would be really big. Sony has not had decent choices for a long time until the 400/2.8 or shooting EF hybrid like the Sigma 500/4 + MC11. I just hope they introduce something besides another $12k lens and something longer than their 100-400. Marc

    Montreal or vicinity in July

I might be in Montreal for a conference in July and would like to do a little bird photography while there. Any recommendations in the city? I also don't mind renting a car and doing a day trip or an overnighter in the area. TIA, Marc

What sony gear do you shoot for birds?

Right now, I'm using the d850 with battery grip + tamron 150-600 g2. It's great. 9 FPS, super fast and accurate autofocus, 45 MP so I can crop a ton, great IQ, good high ISO. But it weighs in at almost 7 lb (3 kg). So I'm now looking at Sony options to see if I can drop some weight (I just...

    Red-breasted sapsucker? (Santa Cruz, California)

I think it's a red-breasted sapsucker, but could only get this rear shot. The rump sure looks like an owl face to me! This was taken with an MM4/60, 32x eyepiece, and iPhone 8. My first digiscoping efforts with it. Thanks, Marc

    MM4 kit question

I'm going up to a reseller to test out an MM4 60mm. This would be my only scope and would be used in addition to 10x42 or 8x33 bins. Sometimes on a tripod, sometimes from a vehicle window mount. I think I want the SDL v2 for versatility and 23x (40831M) for FoV. Opinions on this setup? I...

    TSN-550 series?

I've not seen much on the TSN-550 series since the early posts towards the end of 2017. Do people use this model? Or is it not really worth the premium? Marc
