    Just upgraded ATS65 eyepiece...

I have the Swaro ATS65 non-HD and spent a very constructive hour or two at In Focus, Martin Mere trying out the 25-50WA eyepiece against my 20-60. Also had an HD model set up and swapping round eyepieces and scopes looking out onto the main mere proved very interesting and fruitful. I concluded...

    Settings for D7200 & Nikon 200-500

I’ve more or less figured out that Manual Mode with aperture at f5.6, shutter speed at 1/1250, single point AF and Auto ISO is the way to go for BIF so can I just leave those settings for all general bird photography with possible adjustments to shutter speed and/or aperture when photographing...

Best (safest) strap for a big lens tripod foot

When I eventually get my Tammy 150-600 G2 (or Nikon 200-500) what’s the safest strap to use for carrying? I am currently using a Black Rapid Curve Breathe with my D7200 and 18-200 zoom. Can I just use that with the long lens with the addition of a safety tether? I’ve also seen somewhere on...

    Lightroom Problem...

As a Raw beginner (excuse the pun) I have put an older version 3.2 (legitimate) on my laptop and updated it to 3.6 in an effort to learn to process RAW files from my D7200 Apart from the fact that it’s all hieroglyphics to me (I intend to use tutorials though) I can’t access any of my RAW...

    Nikon Monarch 7 10x30

So, I’ve been posting recently about looking at Nikon Prostaff 7S 10x30 as a travel pair of bins and others have been offering their opinions. So today I went to big department store John Lewis for a peep through a pair as my regular optical supplier, In Focus, doesn’t stock them. Arrived at...

    Waders, Ria Formosa, Portugal

Here’s a couple from the Ria Formosa, Monday 16.09.19 I think the first photo might be a Little Stint? The second, poorer quality picture, I’m not sure, as the colouring looks like a Sanderling but the legs are far too long and it’s a bigger bird. Thanks, in advance.

    Opticron Traveller BGA Mg 10x32

Thinking of getting some 10x smaller binoculars (but not compacts) for holiday birding where a bit more reach will be an advantage. My local In Focus recommends Opticron Traveller BGA ED but they could be few more quid than I want to pay. The above Magnesium bins look interesting and I’ve...

    Which tern?

Photographed on the Ria Formosa, Algarve, Portugal. Couldn’t download SD card so this is a phone pic of my Nikon D5600 screen.

    Nikon Prostaff 7S 10x30 - anyone?

Thinking of getting these as my “holiday pair” instead of the little Nikon Sportstar 8x25 that I usually carry. Anyone have a perspective on them born out of actual use? I usually have 8x bins for birding but this time, on the Ria Formosa, there’s a lot of distance viewing so a bit more reach...

Best long lens for about a grand for D7200

Always get good recommendations from you gents so looking for the above for later in the year when I may be blessed with a big(gish) birthday present. The D7200 is an upgrade from a D5600 and is on its way in around a week when I get back from my hols in Portugal. Thanks in advance.

    Upgrading D5600 to D7200

After a year with the D5600, I have the opportunity to upgrade to a D7200 body. I am trading in my 5600 and the 18-55 kit lens for a used body in vgc and have my 18-200 DX VR2 and 70-300 DX VR to use with the new camera. At the moment I’m on the Ria Formosa in Portugal pursuing birds and I...

    Quick question...

Quite simply, are the lenses I have for my D5600 also compatible with a D7200? Thanks...

    Buying a Used Swarovski ATS65...

I’ve just cut a deal for one of these, with a recently Swarovski-serviced 20-60 eyepiece and original neoprene SOC. As it’s not the HD version (common sense should have told me, looking at the price) am I going to be disappointed or was/is it a good scope pre the HD version? I will be trading...

    Mm4ed77

Just had a look at this scope at WWT Martin Mere (I own the MM3ED60 with SDL zoom eyepiece) and was very impressed. I think a body-only trade is in the offing!

Nikon Focus Points: Anyone know why...

...when I have any focus point setting selected, Single Point, 9 Point, 39 Point that the only focus point I’m getting in the viewfinder is one fixed at the top right of the grid? This happens in Program Mode and Aperture Priority which are the two settings I use most. If I switch to Dumbo mode...

    Birds in Flight for beginners...

I’ve touched on this in camera and lens threads and had varying degrees of advice so I thought it needed a thread of its own. I have a Nikon D5600 and the AF 70-300 DX VR and, notwithstanding the reservations of some regarding that lens for birding, I’d like to get the optimum performance when...

    Nikon 18-200 f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED AF-S DX VR II

I am thinking of getting this as a one-size fits all walkaround lens for my D5600. I have the AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300 mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR for when a longer reach is needed. I realise this lens is not the be and end all of birding lenses but I’ve decided that a big, heavy 500/600 is not for me. I...

Tamron 2nd generation SP 150-600mm Di VC USD 'G2'

Tried to reply to this thread further down but it’s shut down due to age (bit like my love-life). Anyway my lens arrives tomorrow so I’ll no doubt be plaguing you lot for assistance in smoothing out the learning curve.

    Reliable online supplier?

Has anyone used MH-Direct of Repton, Derbyshire, to buy any photographic equipment? They operate an eBay shop and one on Amazon Marketplace. They have good feedback but I was wondering if anyone has any personal experience of them? Their prices are good, to say the least and I’m assuming they...

Used Nikon D5100 deal - advice please

How does a used D5100 with a 18-105 zoom and a 35mm f1.8 with a Lowepro Slingshot bag and a Sun Sniper sling for £350 sound? Your input will be much appreciated as I need to make a decision ASAP.

Canon vs Nikon - entry level.

Following on from my thread about an entry level DSLR on the Canon Forum I’d like to pose this question to you camera buffs about the merits of these 2 outfits. Canon 200D with 18-55 and 70-300 zooms Nikon D5300 with 18-55 and 70-300 zooms As outfits they are (nominally) £599 the Canon and...

    Entry level DSLR

Up to now I have been using a LUMIX FZ72 Megazoom for my (non too-serious) birding forays but the small sensor and massive 60x zoom don’t make comfortable bedfellows. If I buy a DSLR, like an Eos 200D, and add a EF 75-300 zoom will I be able to get pictures that will crop for decent results...

    Tavira, Algarve, Sept 2018

River estuary and large lagoons and salt pans. White Stork, Greater Flamingo, Black Winged Stilt, Sanderling, Grey Plover, Great White Egret, all from a tour road train and a down-river ferry to the beach. Birding tour by boat tomorrow so hopefully add to the roster.

    Mysterious Deaths...

My son found these two juvenile blackbirds lying close together in his garden with no apparent clues to their demise. They’ve got a cat but I’d expect to see more damage from a cat attack.
