    Great service from Leica

I was on a birding holiday in April and my scope went over. Fortunately I managed to catch it just as it hit the deck so the only damage was a split in the pull-up eyecup on the eyepiece. When I got home I contacted Leica through their website to see if I could get a replacement as this is the...

7 hours in Abu Dhabi - what to do?

I am flying to Nepal next month with a stop in Abu Dhabi from 7am to 2pm. Are there any local sites handy for the airport that would be worth a quick walk or taxi ride for a couple of hours birding? Any informatio would be most useful, thanks in advance. Nick

    7D ISO values

I'm going to Ghana for a few days birding this weekend. My primary interest is seeing/watching birds and wildlife but I do enjoy getting a few record shots as well. I'm expecting it to be quite gloomy in the forest so my question is what ISO values should I aim to be using to get reasonable...

    Full frame cameras

I'm looking at the possibility of getting a full frame body for landscape and 'general' photos. Which would be the best option: New Canon Eos 6D or second hand Canon Eos 5D mkII? Any thoughts and experiences would be welcome, thanks. Nick

Books by Basil Ede - wildlife artist supreme

I just acquired two books of British Birds by Basil Ede: "Birds of Town and Village" and "Basil Ede's Birds". They were originally published in the 60's and 70's - before I started birding so I never really knew about them before but I have to say the artwork is absolutely superb, some of the...

7 hours in Dubai - what to do, where to go?

Hi all I'll be flying back to UK from Africa in November and unfortunately there's been a change of schedule with the flights meaning I have a 7-hour transit in Dubai From 7.30am to 2.30pm local time. I'd hate to be stuck inside the airport all day so is it worth trying to get out and about...

    RFI Islay in July

I'm lucky enough to be heading to Islay for a week in mid-July. It will be a general walking, wildlife watching, whisky drinking trip 8-P. It's my first time on the island so I thought I'd ask if anyone has any specific advice on sites to visit for any of the scarcer birds and animals. Thanks...

    Winter visitors, summer visitors

An interesting day yesterday as the cold weather finally shows signs of abating I saw my first spring migrants of the year - Chiffchaff, Sand martin and Common sandpiper - and we still have some winter visitors knocking around - Brambling, a few Redwing and a nice flock of 20 Waxwings. Not much...

    Photo equipment hire

Hello all I'm off on a birding trip next month and stumbled across this site: http://www.hireacamera.com/ I'm thinking it might be worthwhile renting a Canon 300 f2.8 IS for a couple of weeks. Has anyone out there had any dealings with 'hire-a-camera' ... or any other recommendations to...

    Pipit ID - Namibia

Hi all This was taken in Etosha earlier this month. I've convinced myself that it's an African Pipit ... does anyone see any reason to re-consider? Thanks Nick

    Namibia, 1-14 May 2011

Just thought I'd share a few memories of our recent trip to Namibia. Most organised tours tend to go there in September/October when the weather is at it's hottest and driest as this tends to draw large concentrations of game to the dwindling waterholes. Some birding trips also go late March...

    Baby robin

It's still March and yet on my regular dog-walk this morning I encountered a young robin, obviously newly fledged, hopping around under some trees. One adult bird was nearby. I know some birds start nesting quite early but I've never seen young birds in March before! Nick

    I'm going to Namibia!

I've just booked my flights and I'm in the process of confirming accommodation for a birds/mammals/scenery holiday to Namibia, first two weeks of May!! Our proposed itinerary will be something like: Windhoek-Swakopmund-Erongo-Western Etosha-Eastern Etosha-Waterburg-Windhoek. I realise there's a...

    Waxwings in East Yorkshire?

I'll be visiting family this coming weekend for New Year and I know my dad would love to see some waxwings. Can anyone direct me to a reliable spot where we might have a chance of finding some in the Filey-Bridlington-Hornsea-Driffield area? Many thanks Nick

    Eagle sp for identification: Kenya

I took these photos of an eagle at Lake Nakuru in Kenya last month. It was in a clearing under acacia trees and very dark and the pics were coming out soft so I deliberately under-exposed a couple of shots to see if I could get them sharper. Obviously, brightening the images in photoshop has...

    Wonderful Kenya

Dear all Here's a report of a recent trip to Kenya, surely one of the most magical birding destinations in the world. A couple of years ago the BBC ran a series called Elephant Diaries, filmed at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Elephant Orphanage near Nairobi...

    Dragonfly ID - Manchester

I'm willing to confess that I know nothing (or even less than that) about dragonflies, except that this year they have been in very short supply in my garden, where the pond usually attracts quite a few. However, a spot off warm sunshine on Sunday finally brought a couple out and I managed to...

    Leica V-Lux 1

Is anyone out there using this camera? I'd be interested in some feedback on performance; 1. As a general walkabout camera 2. As a bird/wildlife camera There don't seem to be any full reviews out there yet. Cheers Nick

    An armchair tick

Heres a shot I took a couple of weeks ago of some hippos in Ethiopia. I'd been back home over a week before I got round to opening and post-processing it on my PC so I was mightily surprised to see an African Pied Wagtail on the extreme right of shot. What an armchair tick that is! Nick :D
