Startling: birds prefer whole to ground peanuts.

I have been purchasing peanuts and peanut butter from an 'animal feed' wholesaler in North Carolina for about the last four years. I typically get a couple deliveries of ~300lbs. during the year. A couple of things I have learned: all birds, from Wrens to Jays, prefer whole kernels. They also...

Sounds from 6:30 am in the States

I live about 40 miles from the Atlantic coast on the edge of a marsh off Chesapeake Bay ..and, ~100 crow's miles SE of Washinton DC. I cobbed together some bits around my shop to make a disk. I bought a PoP mike for ~U$12 from Amazon to use with my iPhone 6. I have revised my dish to help get...

Not live - cam in Owl box

This is a Wood Duck box repurposed for a Screech Owl ...that was also inhabited by a Crested Flycatcher this past summer. Previously, I simply hung a security cam under the box covering a section of the 1/4mi drive up to the house. I had a great deal of difficulty as I live on a marsh and the...

    Adaptor #3 ...almost.

I have gone thru two that there was no way to jury-rig or modify to work. A third came: the 'Mobile Device Holder'. However, its jaw only opens to 53mm. With a Dremel tool, I defeated the stop and was able to gain the few mm to open the jaws - now out-of-round. You'd better be taking...

    Nervous about eye cups....

Folks, I have a Phone Skope 'universal' for an iPhone 6. I have two scopes, a Swaro ATS 65 and an Alpen 788. The universal adapter is a tick too small for both of these scopes. The solution seems obvious, but I am nervous about pulling the rubber cups off. Any advice would be appreciated...

    Two scopes side by side...

Two newbies buy two scopes... We had the fortunate opportunity to purchase two scopes: a Swaro ATS 65mm and the Alpen 788 80mm. Both were in perfect condition and very reasonable, considering the current, individual retail price for similar models. (we always buy cars that come off lease)...

Phone Skope universal does not fit...

..an Alpen 788, nor the Swaro ATS 65. 'Assuming' this is to fit over the rubber eyecup, it is too small. As the Swaro adaptor is a tick dear for a couple of bits of plastic, is there another brand alternative that does not resemble a construction site? Thanks. Jim

    Fixed-wide or variable eyepiece

Folks, I'm sure buried in posting history are multiple answers to this dilemma. But, there must be a consensus, at least among the mfgrs, as they all seem to ship with variable lens. I have a Swaro ATS 65 inbound with a variable lens, but want to optimize my wife's experience. I would never...

High praise for Swarovski repair dept.

My wife's 8x20Bs are certainly not top catalog but the U.S. repair station exceeded any expectations in servicing these glasses. The principal issue was a loose (what I'd call) 'compaction' hinge. The glasses were workable, but annoying. They now even have a little silver eagle. 'Public...

Mystery bird in the marsh at night...

I have lived on a marsh off Chesapeake Bay for 20yrs.. I take the dog out at about 9pm ..2am ..7am +-. At sunrise there's a full chorus of everything in Spring/Summer ..at dusk, typically the Cardinals finish the day's music. But, in the dark ..and only in the reeds, there is a flock/s of...

Best times of year for Assateaque?

I live in woods/marsh off the Nanticoke W. of Salisbury and have spent 25yrs surfing at the Federal Park, but only recently have we started paying attention birds on the coast. (we have a different lot of birds only 40mi due W) Roughly early October I was just inside the dune getting ready to...

8x20 B's get dusty ..in the pouch?!

I kept thinking ..'She must have put them away dirty.' I turned the pouch inside-out ..it appears there may have been a thin layer of foam between the inner/outer skins. Pretty much any foam will turn to powder with age. I may have a fix. If so, I will share and take my wife to my favorite...
