Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS & crop camera

I'm currently using a Canon 60D camera and use my 300mm L IS to shoot macro shots of butterflies, insects, etc. I'm thinking of purchasing the 100mm macro but am wondering about the results I can expect using my crop sensor camera. Any thoughts about this combination?

Google Pixel 2 & Swarovski scope

I have a Google Pixel 2 phone (my 1st smartphone) and am looking for a good adapter to be able to use it with my Swarovski STS 65HD. I keep an Otterbox on my phone for protection and would like to find something that fairly easy on/off as I would switch between the two.

Snowy Egret and Great Blue Heron- feeding style

One of my favorite local birding spots, a small reservoir that is almost fully drained with plans to be turned into a future meadow and wetland area, has been hosting a rare (location and time-of-year) Snowy Egret for almost a week now. There's also been a more regular Great Blue Heron, and it's...

    Canon 60D and video

Lately when I turn my 60D on to shoot video (mostly birds in their habitat) it will turn off after about 10-15 seconds. I then turn it back on and it seems to be fine. ANy ideas on what might be causing this problem (other than me)? For lenses I'm usually using Canon 300mm L IS or Sigma 150-600...

    Powershot SX50 HS

After reading a blog post from photographer Lillian Stokes about the Powershot and using it as a lightweight, but still sharp, alternative to a DSLR and long lenses, I purchased a used one. My primary purpose was more convenience when carrying w/ binocs, and getting long distance shots for ID...

    recommendations for selling

I'd like to sell some old camera equipment and cannot sell here as I am not (yet) a member. I've looked at mpb and keh and wanted to know about people's experience with either one. With mpb I submitted some older equipment (AE-1 body & lenses) and their email responding to me did not recognize...

    Use of filters on scopes

Hi all. I finally made my scope purchase- Swaro STS 65mm. I use protective filters on my camera lenses, and was wondering if people use them on their scopes? Suggestions and thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

Swarovski STS 65 HD vs STX 65

I know the STX models are interchangeable, but is there any performance difference/upgrade the new STX has over the older STS model? If I'm only thinking of buying one scope/size, can I save money and get the same performance?

    Canon 60D and lenses/teleconverters

Hello all. I'm currently using a Canon 60D with a 300mm f/4L IS prime lens and a 1.4x teleconverter. I'm looking at upgrading to a Sigma 150-600mm f/5‑6.3 DG OS or a Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II. Will I be able to use a 1.4x teleconverter on these lenses? Thanks!

    Monopod recommendations

I recently purchased a used Canon Powershot SX50 HS as an alternative to walking distances with my 300mm set-up & binocs combined- getting older is no good for the lower back. The Powershot is light as a feather but I find it's so light I'm having trouble stabilizing it and I get shaky hand...

    Recording with an MP3 player

I'm using an MP3 player to try to do some recordings, and was hoping to be able to edit my recordings using only what's on my computer, Windows Media Player. Is it possible to edit the recording? Basically I just want to be able to cut off the excess time...if I get 10 seconds of a bird call...

Manfrotto & customer service on problems

Hi all. I have a Manfrotto 128RC fluid head that I purchased several years ago. The mechanism that holds the QR plate in place has always been sticky, but now it's giving me major problems to the point of not working at all. I'm wondering what is the best way to go about getting it fixed...

    Scope size and prices

Hi all. After 10-plus years of birding I recently bought just my 2cd pair of binoculars, upgrading from a $300 pair of Eagle Optics Ranger 10x42 to a Zeiss Victory SF 8x42 (grey), and am loving the high quality and performance of such high-end glass. So much light, clarity, and color that pops...

    Full frame camera question

I'm an enthusiast photographer who primarily enjoys bird photography but also take some classes and shoot other subjects as well. I'm using a Canon 60D with a 300mm f/4 L IS lens and a 1.4 extender. I'm very satisfied with the results, but of course wish for a longer lens to get closer to the...

Vortex Razor HD 85mm & digiscoping

Is anyone digiscoping with the Razor 85mm and a DSLR? I have a Canon 60D and use a 300mm fixed lens w/ 1.4 extender to get me to 420mm. I'd love to try digiscoping with the extra length but have not seen many examples using Vortex (I see a lot of work using Swarovski and Kowa). Thanks!

    Kowa 88mm vs 77mm

I was thinking or purchasing a Kowa Spotting Scope in 88mm but noticed the 77mm at a savings of $800. Has anyone compared both size scopes to comment on the price difference and quality of what will be seen? I'm now thinking of the 77mm and putting that extra money to a new pair of binoculars...

Vortex Razor HD vs top line competitors

I'm thinking of purchasing a spotting scope, and a top of the line, most expensive model- Kowa, Swarovski... would be quite a stretch for my budget. For those who have a Vortex and have compared it to the others, is the difference in performance of the others worth twice the price of the...

    Digiscoping- Swarovski or Zeiss scope?

Hello all. New forum member here. I am looking into purchasing a spotting scope and hopefully exploring the world of digiscoping. I currently have a Canon 60D DSLR, and I shoot with a 300mm f4L IS lens. I would love the extra magnification the scope provides. I'm looking for good quality...
