    Merlin and skylark

I need to share my experience from yesterday with anyone who will listen. I was out on my bike (Scottish central lowlands) when I saw two birds flying wildly in the distance. As I got closer I realised it was a merlin chasing a skylark. The merlin kept diving at the skylark which flew out of the...

    Geese central Scotland

I saw these geese this morning in central Scotland. They struck me as longer-necked than the typical pink-footed geese which are typical in the area. I wondered if they might be bean geese and took a few quick pictures in terrible light. I've looked at the pictures too much and can convince...

    Falcon and cuckoo Zhejiang China

These photos were taken yesterday in woodland near the shore of the Qiantang River estuary in Zhejiang China. The cuckoo I don't hold out much hope for but thought I'd post it in case anyone spots something identifiable in it. It seemed small in the field but lone birds and all that... The...

    Cuckoo Zhejiang, China

Is there enough in these pictures to identify this cuckoo seen this morning in a city park in lowland Zhejiang province, China? Michael

Mallard or black duck central Scotland

This duck was with a group of mallards this morning (10th June) on a small lake in central Scotland. Many of the males were just changing over in to eclipse plumage, and that may well be what this is, but it stood out as unusually dark and dull coloured. Is there any way to rule out American...

Visiting Parque del Guadalhorce, Malaga by car.

I'm staying in Spain near Malaga for a few days this week and was hoping to visit Parque del Guadalhorce traveling by car. I'm struggling to find details about where I could park. Anyone got any experience of visiting by car? I would be visiting with my only moderately birding- tolerant family...

    Andalucia, Spain, Lark ID

I'm in the mountains (~600 m) in southern Andalcucia, Spain (near Comares) and have seen and heard a lark in song flight that I can't identify. The only lark I'm familiar with is skylark; in comparison this one looked much shorter-tailed and flew lower with a wobblier, less stable-looking...

    Scaup? Central Scotland 1/4/23

I saw this duck today with a flock of tufted ducks. The white on the face is pretty limited and well within the range for a tufted but it stood out as being a different shape: big bill, round head and sloping back seem to fit scaup better. Thoughts? Michael

    Feather ID Aberdeen UK

My colleague asked me if I could identify this feather (I can't). Apparently it mysteriously appeared inside a locked car in Aberdeen in 2001! Any ideas? Michael

Sparrowhawk prey ID from feathers UK

A female sparrowhawk flew in to my garden in lowland central Scotland carrying prey earlier today. I didn't get a good look as I was trying not to disturb it. I went to have look at the feathers it left and they look really distinctive but I can't think what they're from. The longest feather in...

Marsh or reed warbler central Scotland

I saw and heard this warbler this morning in reed beds in central scotland. On hearing it, I'd assumed it was a sedge warbler (very common at the site) but was really impressed by the amount of mimicry so moved a bit closer to try to record it. I spotted that it lacked the bold sedge warbler...

    Caterpillar (?) ID Scotland

I saw the attached orange creature, that I think is a caterpillar, in grassland near reed beds in central Scotland. Any suggestions? Michael

    Scaup or tufted, central Scotland

I'm guessing this is just one of those female tufties with a lot of white around the bill but could it be a scaup and can we be sure from the poor pictures? As I see it the pro-scaup features are: no hint of a tuft from any angle, back looked greyer than nearby female tufties. Pro-tuftie: one...

    Hybrid pigeon Scotland?

This pigeon has been coming to my garden in rural central Scotland together with other feral pigeons with highly varied plumage. To me it looks quite like a stock dove but without the black eyes and wingbars. Did it just end up like this by chance or could it be a hybrid? There are plenty of...

    Scaly-breasted munias? Zhejiang, China

Are these scaly-breasted munias? I found some calls online at the time and they sounded about right. If, so are they young birds? Seen in an urban park in Haining, Zhejiang, China in mid-November. Michael

    Flycatcher Zhejiang, China

I saw the attached flycatcher in an wooded urban park in Zhejiang province today. There were also grey-streaked flycatchers around and this seemed noticeably bigger and chunkier. It was also a richer, redder brown. I didn't get any pictures of the front but it had diffuse dark colouring at the...

    Day flying bat Wales

I saw this bat flying in broad daylight (1pm) earlier this week in north Wales in a wooded area. Is there enough in the picture to identify the species? Michael

    Phylloscopus warbler Zhejiang, China

I saw this warbler this morning in a city park in Zhejiang province, China. There were lots of yellow-browed warblers calling around but I convinced myself this was something different and larger. Looking at the pictures now I'm suspecting it might be the same again. Michael

    Buntings, Zhejiang, China

I did think I was getting the hang of the local bunting options in eastern China but I'm getting myself confused again. I came across a flock of buntings in agricultural lowland Zhejiang province. I initially took them to be yellow-browed but I don't remember them be quite so rufous. I'm now...

    Yellow-browed warbler? Zhejiang, China

I saw this warbler earlier today in what I assume is a tree nursery in lowland Zhejiang province China. Is it a yellow-browed? Michael

Unknown passerine and peregrine, Zhejiang, China

I saw two starling-sized grey birds in Haining, Zhejiang, China this morning and have no idea what they were (first 3 pictures, probably 2 different birds). The seemed kind of finch-like but don't match anything I can find. I feel like I'm missing something obvious. There's also a picture of...

    Hawk Zhejiang, China

Terrible picture, but can anyone offer any opinions on this accipiter (I assume) seen today in Zhejiang, China. It was soaring over a city park and the image is a good representation of how it appeared in the flesh. Doesn't seem like Eurasian sprawk (the only option I'm familiar with) to me. It...

    Ardrossan ferry sea watch

I'm in the unusual situation of having a Saturday to myself without wife and children. Obviously I'm planning a day's birding. I read on the Ayrshire birding site that the ferry from Ardrossan to Arran can make for good birding maybe including storm petrels (missing from my life list). Is it too...

A few ID confirmations from China

These were all seen in Zhejiang province, Eastern China this weekend (mid-September). I'm reasonably confident I've got them right but would appreciate confirmation. Is the first an intermediate egret? The second one I'm pretty sure is a Chinese pond heron but is it a juvenile or have I just...

    Do other birds recognize cuckoos?

Wasn't quite sure which forum to put this question in but bird ID is at the heart of it. I just saw a bird (in eastern China) that I thought was a cuckoo of some sort but all the other birds around acted as if it was a raptor (they flew off quickly). Cuckoo's certainly look very raptor-like but...
