East Texas Snake ID's (one dead)

The one on the tree I am assuming is some sort of rat/king snake? I relocated him with my new snake tongs. (had to invest in some, I literally see 5+ snakes a day at their property, mostly around the house) My parents put down the sticky trap to catch all the scorpions that have been coming in...

ID Needed For East Texas Snake

Also, I saw a bright orange and dark black banded snake. Seemed to have more orange than black. He was skinny and in the water. Very quick .Never seen a snake like it. I have looked in my books and there is nothing that looks even near it.

Best Place/Time To See Golden-Cheeked Warbler and Black Capped Vireo?

I am from the Fredericksburg/Comfort area and plan on making a trip down there sometime soon. When I grew up there I was not into birding, however, now I would really like to see Golden-Cheeked Warbler and Black-Capped vireo. Where would the best place to see these birds be? Doesn't have to be...

    North Texas ID's Needed

More specifically Dallas. I know the duck is a Scaup, but do not know for sure if he is greater or lesser. His head seems a little rounder, so I am guessing greater? The bird in the last picture looks the most like a White-eyed Vireo to me? But my map shows they are here in summer.

Looking for a good pair of Binos under from $200-300

Hello, I am currently looking for a pair between $200-300 of 8X42 binoculars, possibly 8X30's to keep in my car. I do not want to carry around my Leicas, as I already had a pair of Zeiss binoculars stolen from my car years ago. I have been looking online at the Eagle Optics Ranger, Nikon...

    Dallas, Texas Shorebird

It seems like the few birds I think this shorebird might be are not shown in this part of the state in my field guide. Also, the last picture is not really discernible, however, I thought maybe he looked like a swamp sparrow? Any ideas? I figures that picture is not identifiable.

    Fort Worth, Texas Bird ID's

I apologize about some of these pictures, I was messing with different settings today and some did not turn out very good. But knowing how good some of you are, I figured I could still get the ID's! The bird in 3 & 4 was moving upside down on the tree like a woodpecker, but I have no idea what...

    Are There Any Monopod Extensions?

I have googled it but cannot come up with anything. I have a Slik Pro Pod 600. It is 63", however I am 6'2" and I wish it was a little taller. 3-4 inches probably. It works 80% of the time for me, but when taking pictures up in trees I always have to either lift the whole thing up or awkwardly...

    Bird Song Question

Hello I just downloaded a few bird song identification CD's on iTunes. My question is, do most birds of the same group (not sure if that is family or genus) have a similar song that I can recognize by learning one of the members songs from these albums? For instance, the CD I downloaded has...

Canon SX40 or Panasonic FZ150? (Mainly For Bird Identification Assistance)

Hello Having been birding now several times, I have decided my biggest problem is bird identification. I figured the best way to solve this problem is by taking pictures of the birds. I have read a lot of threads about super zoom cameras and birding and it seems like this is my best option...

Eastern or Western Guide to Birds For Texas Birding?

Hello I have bought a few different field guides lately, but both have been for North America as a whole. I have noticed when looking for a field guide than many are for the Eastern US, and many for western species. Since Texas is in the middle, and has many species migrate through the...

Will This Tripod Work For A Celestron Regal 65 F-ED?

Hello I am about to order a Celestron 65 FE-D spotting scope online. Having never owned a spotting scope, I have no idea which tripod to get. I like the reviews and price of this one: Slik Pro 500DX Tripod with 3-Way Pan/Tilt Head. All the reviews are about photography though. here is the...

    Amateur Seeking Spotting Scope Advice

Hello all, I am sure this gets asked here every day, but I am new, so go easy on me! After researching the last few days, I am considering getting a 15x45 Vortex Viper or a Leupold Ventana, but would consider any other scope around $4-500. (also considering the Nikon ED 50 and spending a little...

New To This In The Dallas, TX Area

Hello all. In the past I lived on the Southern Texas coast, and the only birding I have ever done was going with my mother a few times to the lookout points in the area since that area is a hotspot for birds. However, I have been needing a new hobby living in Dallas. I know this sounds lame...
