I am thinking getting this duck to species is impossible, but if anyone has thoughts. Photographed in November in Baltimore County, Maryland.

    Swankyspoon's 2015 Maryland Year List

Alright, time to start up my Maryland list for my third full year of birding! I have twins (!) coming in a couple of weeks, so this might be a slower year for birding. Still, I think a solid list is attainable, with many good birds to show for it. Here are my last totals. 2013: 110 2014...

    Sub-$300 scope?

I am looking for a scope on a tight budget. I realize that quality will be compromised, but is there anything worthwhile that can be had on such a budget? I would want waterproof. Otherwise, I'm pretty open. I was thinking: Bushnell Trophy XLT 20-60x or Celestron 52250 80mm Ultima Zoom...

    Swankyspoons 2014 Maryland List

Welcome back! Last year was my first full year of birding, with a focus on Baltimore City/County and a few trips outside. I saw 107 Species in Baltimore City/County and a total of 110 in all of Maryland (Highlights: Snowy Owl, Painted Bunting, and a late Nashville Warbler). This year I am...

Carolina or Black-Capped Chickadee in Baltimore County, MD, USA?

The norm here are Carolina, but Black-Capped are a rare winter visitor. This visitor to my feeder struck me as a bit larger... I'd appreciate your input!

    My Baltimore County Year!

This year, I plan to focus on my local area, that is Baltimore City and Baltimore County. I started birding in mid-2012, so this will be my first year birding a full year. Since I am new to birding, this year will be a learning experience, and will hopefully produce a number of lifers. I have a...

    Red-Shouldered Hawk in the Mud

Hi Folks, Today I was walking by a tiny pond on my development (in Maryland) that had been drained for some reason. In one small remaining pool there were two mallards. There was also a juvenile Red-Shouldered hawk digging around in the mud. It didn't seem interested in the mallards, but with...

    Reasonably Priced Binoculars

Hello! I have been birding for about 2.5 months. I have been using Olympus Roamers, which have been good for a start (Thanks to BF for the recommendation on those! I plan to continue to use these as compacts). However, for my main binoculars, I'd like to move up to something better. Here are...

    A Bald Eagle

Today I went out to one of my usual birding sites. It was pretty uneventful. I was looking at a House Finch, learning to distinguish it from a Purple Finch. Then I looked up and saw an adult Bald Eagle (Lifer!) soar fairly close overhead. It was unmistakable with the white head and white tail...

    Canada Goose with an Arrow.

So today I was birding by a nearby pond that is home to about eighty Canada Geese (among other birds). One of the Canada Geese (see picture) had an arrow in him (poor guy :( ). It was walking around and swimming, but it must be in a lot of pain. Is there anything one can do in these situations...

    Raptor in Baltimore County

Saw this one in a Baltimore County, Maryland cemetery eating a small bird. I apologize in advance for the picture quality My best guess is a Norther Harrier or maybe a Cooper's Hawk? I'd appreciate any opinions. Thanks

    Inexpensive Binoculars?

Hi Folks, So, I am brand-spanking new to this, and I'd love to pick up a pair of binoculars. However, money is an issue. I really cannot afford more than around $40 right now. I realize that you get what you pay for. Is it worth getting a pair at this price? If so, what do you suggest? Thanks!
