    Madeira

We have 8 days in Madeira just after Easter. A couple of questions. Does anyone have experience of the Thursday night Zino Petrel tour? Is it worth doing as there are spaces when we are there. Is Palheiro Gardens still the easiset place to connect with the Pigeon, Firecrest and Chaffinch? thanks

Natural Wonders of Chile - 27th January to 19th February 2024

We had long wanted to do a bird and nature watching tour of Chile but although we have travelled quite extensively in South America we had never made it to Chile apart from a brief day trip from Argentina and a stop at the Chilean Antarctic base. We did think about doing a predominantly birding...

Strap for R7 and 100-500 lens

Just upgraded from 7D mkii and 100-400, not sure about using the same Peak Design strap as it left marks on the 7D body. What are others using for this combo for comfort and adjustability? R7 strap doesn't look up to the job.

    North East Brazil

North East Brazil Trip Report - August 23 We booked with Brazil Birding Experts after great feedback from our friends Roland and Ann who went to Brazil twice with BBE (Ciro) and also good reviews on Birdforum. Booking was all done with Joanna once we had agreed a date when Ciro was free to...

    Lisbon in May

Hi we are going to be in Lisbon for 5 days later this month - we will probably have a day free for some birding. Any recommendations for sites reachable by public transport.

    Papua and Waigeo Oct 22

I normally wouldn't do a trip report for an organised tour but it was suggested it might be useful even for people intending to do it with just local guides. It was 10 years since we did Papua New Guinea as a full on birding trip with just local guides and lots of local hassle. We really...

Lucky storm gives us good Bittern views at Leighton Moss

As part of the Jubilee beak we did a trip up to Leighton Moss. We were doing OK, glimpse of a Bittern, good views of a Marsh Harrier, Bearded Tit and Cetti Warbler etc. We got to the lower hide just a drop or two of rain fell, it eventually became torrential and the sky showed no sign of it...

    Another trip to Tenerife

After Jos’s comprehensive report on Tenerife, I decided to just do a quick update on what we found from our trip last week. First I should say that it had rained heavily the week before we arrived and there was some further rain when we were there, it was also pretty cold with snow above 2200...

    Barbados and Lesser Antilles Cruise

Not really a birding trip but prompted by a couple of PM's I've decide to do a report as there is some birding. Around 30 years ago we looked at our travel and bird watching list to date and speculated that by the end of 2021 we could have seen 100 countries and got over 5000 birds and seen...

    Lesser Antilles cruise

So a first for us, loks like we are going on a tourist cruise this week-end starting and ending in Barbados (our other cruises to the Arctic, Antarctica, Galapagos etc have been on small ships with a focus on wildlife) so very different. There will be over 1000 passengers on board not huge by...

    Motmot Tours ceases to operate

Another tour company has stopped trading with the organisers choosing to retire. We only used the company twice but were impressed with their communications and logistics.

    Scariest birding moments

When I was posting on another thread "Birds I've Seen 2" it made me think of our scary moments when birding and if the birds were worth it, after a quick discussion we came up with these as our top three. I’m sure other birders have had even more hair-raising adventures 1) Drive from Negele to...

Cuba but not as we planned it

Cuba 28th December 2020 – 12th January 2021 2020 was our worst year birding since 1987, I had only 10 lifers in Jordan in January and Sarah added just one additional bird to her list after that a Black-bellied Sandgrouse in Fuerteventura in November. So a trip to Cuba with 30+ lifers on offer...

    Fuerteventura November 4th to 11th

So on 29th October it looked like our trip to Cuba was on; Varadero airport was open, tickets and hotels confirmed, we would fly into Varadero on 15th November, drive to Havana for few nights, then back to the north coast and then south coast with a local guide to see most of the endemics...

    Favourite bird species

So in the boring lockdown we were discussing our favourite bird families and coming up with our top 5 birds for each group of species. We tried to do it based on either having a photo (not always the best) or a description from our trip reports The first groups are the obvious one Pittas, Bird...

    Guyana and Trinidad

Sarah has wanted to see Kaieteur Falls for many years and we had both wanted to stay at Asa Wright in Trinidad after staying at Pax and doing just a day visit there some 14 year ago. Day 1 We flew to Trinidad from London Gatwick with BA and connecting flight with Caribbean on to Guyana. We...

    Cuba - guide and resort

We are probably going to Cuba for 10 or 14 days end of November. We will have 2 or 3 days to ourselves for birding away from the hotel and some part days around the resort. I understand car hire is difficult on Cuba so we will probably be looking for 2 days guided birding with transport...

Around the World in 60 days (March – May 2019) with a bit of birding along the way.

We have just started this "Around the World in 60 days trip" I'll post at the end of each leg if there is birding involved. ---------------------------- I had long held ambitions to do a Round-the World trip. After much studying of the Star Alliance RTW tool on their website I had a plan...

Day trip from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City

We are doing a cultural trip to Vietnam and Cambodia next month, I promised this is not a birding one but hopefully some incidental birding around temples etc but we have a few days in Hanoi at the end and a day in Ho Chi Minh City at the start where I could fit some thing in. Any...

    Week in Agadir December 2018

Week in Agadir - December 2018 Having just come back from a 22 day Ethiopian birding trip to a cold and wet UK we felt in need of some sun and relaxation. I looked on-line for good deals and found a week in Agadir staying in the 4 star Riu Tidiki Dunas; sited on the beach in Agadir on an...

    Ethiopia Tour – Oct /November 2018

Ethiopia Tour – Oct /November 2018 We had wanted to go to Ethiopia for some time and nearly visited a couple of year ago but changed our plans when a state of emergency was declared after some local troubles, gladly now this seems a thing of the past. So it while we would normally just get a...

Australia – The Explorers Way and a few extra bits.

Australia – The Explorers Way and a few extra bits (August - Sept 18). Driving the length of the Stuart Highway from South to North Coast with a few detours to Flinders Range, Uluru, Kings Canyon, etc. has been a long held ambition since I saw the Explorer’s Way described as “a journey into...
