    Pacific Islands

I will be crossing the Pacific next winter on a cruise ship and will have single days ashore on Nuka Hiva, Tahiti, Bora Bora, Tonga and at Suva, Fiji. If anyone has any tips, or contacts for possible guides (especially Tahiti and Fiji), they would be much appreciated.

    Birds of Helgoland

A book that has just been brought to my attention and which will go on my Christmas List. Die Vogelwelt der Insel Helgoland (Birds of the island of Helgoland). http://www.amazon.de/Vogelwelt-Insel-Helgoland-Jochen-Dierschke/dp/3000354379/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1321998186&sr=8-1...

    Birds of Brazil CD-ROM soundfiles

Any comments on the Birds of Brazil mp3 CD-ROM. See: http//www.nhbs.com/title.php?tefno=146634 How easy is it to download lots of files to an mp3 player? What sort of coverage is there - how useful for Bahia for example?

    Shetland NOT Shetlands

Only just noticed this - I only ever check anything by New Posts or by Search Forums. Mods please change the title. There is no such place in the world as Shetlands as far as the inhabitants are concerned. Shetland or, if you want to make it clear that it is an archipelago, Shetland Isles, but...

    Carbon balancing

Right, I know some of you will think nothing of any of the schemes, and I think the ones which involve planting scabby sycamores in a field next to the M25 are just a scam, but does anyone have any tips on a good carbon-balancing scheme? There was one the BBC News the other week, providing...

    Multiple windows

Anyone here solve this one? I have Paint Shop Pro 7 and on my old computer, very image I loaded opened in the same copy of PSP. Now, every time I open an image it opens a new copy of PSP, which is infuriating. Its the same copy of PSP I have installed. Any ideas?

    BOU Checklist 1883

Does anyone here know how the first BOU Checklist of the Birds of Britain and Ireland, which appeared in 1883, was actually published. I'm assuming it was in Ibis (in which case does anyone have a citation) but it could have been a booklet. If anyone knows the dates and publication details of...

    RFI Austria in July

I'm off to Austria in July. Not really a birding trip (taking my Mum and Dad to see some mountains) but I hope to see some stuff. I'm staying at Zell-am-See and my target species, in increasing order of unlikelihood are: Alpine Chough (I assume this will be easy). Snowfinch (believe this...

    Sunbird in Gambia

Any comments on the ID of this bird, seen in Abuko, Gambia, on 12th April 2006. It was all black, apart from the green throat, with a slightly notched tail (you can just see it in the photo), was about the size of nearby Scarlet-chested Sunbird and was singing away like mad, a rambling...

    Rockit science

Opinions would be welcome on these Rockit photos. Photographed on 23rd April 2005 in Shetland. Both photographs show what I believe, but cannot prove, is the same bird. It was near or in potential breeding habitat, but was not obviously on territory (so it could be resident or migrant).

    Blue Chaffinch

    March Rosefinch

A female Common Rosefinch has been in Shetland for the last few days. Not only is it an extraordinary date, but the bird looks very fresh. Any comments? http://www.pennington.charitydays.co.uk/latestbirds.htm

    Northern Bullfinch invasion

Many people will already be aware that there is a record invasion of Bullfinches taking place at the moment. Birds began arriving in Shetland on 10th October and by the end of the month they had certainly reached as far as the Western Isles and Ireland. A paper on this influx is being compiled...

    Sylvia sp.

Anyone like to hazard a guess at the ID of ths bird, photographed in strong autumn sunlight in Shetland in September 2003. Note that they are scanned from slides, so colour balance isn't perfect. Looked most like the last photo in the field (i.e very grey) but the brown tones could be seen at...
