Pros
  • Light weight , good zoom range , easy to use
Cons
  • awful battery life , not always sharp , no is
I had this camera about 3 years ago before i upgraded to DSLRs and i now have a Canon EOS 50D with 400mm F5.6 L lens which i use most of the time. Recently i have been browsing through some old pictures and iv'e noticed a huge improvement in the quality of the images although it is'nt a bad camera i was very happy with the images i got before i upgraded to DSLRs but i would always reccomend a DSLR for birding.

Pros
  • Good IS , Light weight and fairly sharp
Cons
  • push/pull zoom , slightly soft at 400mm
I had this lens for about 1 year before i changed to a canon 400 F5.6 prime and i think the canon 400 F5.6 prime is a better lens. I use it for wildlife photography mainly birds and i think it is better because i find the images i get are sharper , the AF is noticebly faster and its a tad lighter. Although the 100-400 has IS i think the prime is better as i never used the IS so if you are thinking about getting one of the two lenes for wildlife photography i would go for the 400mm F5.6.

Bought this camera about 1 month ago to upgrade from my 400D which i had for 2 years and it was great.
But the 50D is even better and is the the best DSLRs i have ever used.
I upgraded from the 400D mainly because of the speed the 6.3fps of the 50D is alot better for catching action shots especially of birds.
I have used this camera in many bird reserves in lancashire and it is brilliant (in my opinion even better than the canon 1d seris) and i would reccomend this camera to anyone looking to upgrade from somthing like a 400D.
Although it may not be sutible as a begginers DSLR

Pros
  • large focal lenth
Cons
  • most things eg no is,heavy,F/6.3 and many more
I had this lens for only 1 week and then immediaty sold it and then bought a sigma 170-500mm and was much more happy with the results of the sigma.

Also the sigma makes less of a dent in the wallet and is optically a better lens by far.

And the sigma is also noticbly lighter so if you want a long birding lens i reccomend you look at the sigma before you make your final decission

Pros
  • Very sharp
Cons
  • TOO HEAVY
Very nice lens very sharp but heavy but it is a superb lens for birding i sold mine 2 months ago for a canon 600mm and was much more impressed with the 600's results.

Although it doesnt match the focal lenth it is a bit sharper.

I am currently using The canon EOS 1DS MK3 wich i purchesd last week and im very impressed by its 21 mega pixel resolution.
