Visual effects in binoculars when used with polarisers

I have no experience with this, so I don't know exactly what kind of improvement you are seeing. I'm also not an expert on this to say the least. But as far as I know, reflection partially polarises the light, so I can image that when viewing through a combination of binoculars and polarising...

    Western Scotland birding

Yes, the West Highland Way is crowded, so start early. On most of the Cape Wrath Trail there is almost nobody.

    Western Scotland birding

The West Highlands are wonderful! I don't live there, but have trekked/ hiked/ camped there a lot. My best adventure was backpacking from Milngavie to Cape Wrath, by following the West Highland way to Fort William and then continuing on the the Cape Wrath Trail in April/ May 2019. This was a 543...

Shots of birds, taken with your pocket camera

After a Masked Flowerpiercer topic somewhere else on this forum, I couldn't resist posting this pocket camera shot (Lumix TZ70) I made in Ecuador. Lucky shot, because most of the time these small birds are too fast for pocket camera shots.

    Will the blue tit return?

Never touch anything until the breeding season is over. It isn't necessary either, because if another bird wants to build a nest there, they will build it right on top.

    Ptarmigan this Month

I would still recommend Cairn Gorm and Ben Macdui because they are easy to access, and Ptarmigan are hit and miss anyway. Take the highest parking lot and walk from there. I have seen Ring Ouzel on that parking lot in the past. On the sub-arctic plateau that is Cairn Gorm and Ben Macdui, I have...

Shots of birds, taken with your pocket camera

Yes that makes sense because 1) they have larger objective lenses and are therefore not limited by diffraction like pocket cameras with super zoon are, and 2) their pixels are larger, so they already have more dynamic range/ less noise and therefore need less noise reduction (=loss of detail) to...

Shots of birds, taken with your pocket camera

This was the day I decided I needed a superzoom on my next camera! Snowy Owl on my Kungsleden backpack in Sweden, with Canon Powershot S95 (10Mp, 3x zoom) Also: Arctic Fox! (on the same trek)

Shots of birds, taken with your pocket camera

Btw, this was taken with a Pentax Optio S (3.2Mp - tiny, 115 grams camera). But arguably very close up :D Rufous-backed Dwarf Kingfisher, Sabah, Malaysia

Shots of birds, taken with your pocket camera

3.2 MP is perhaps a bit low, but I prefer low pixel count in pocket cameras. They are less noisy, so images need less processing by the camera. The old pocket camera I'm using now is 12 Mp which is low by today's standard, but in terms of sensor I preferred my previous camera that had 10 Mp (but...

Shots of birds, taken with your pocket camera

One of the biggest problems with pocket camera is that it often focuses on the background instead of the (small) bird on the foreground. Success rate is considerably higher when the background is empty. Blue-naped Parrot, Philippines

    Help with Great Tit Nestbox

Of course I don't know what happened. But one thing that I have noticed with my own Blue Tit box (with camera) over the years is that often in the beginning things can look great and then after 1-2 weeks chicks start dying, sometimes in large numbers. I suspect that it has to do with them...

What Bird can you hear just now?

From here behind my computer right now, I can hear a Blackbird and Collared Dove singing nearby and a Magpie calling. Also a Robin and a Great Tit singing in the distance (difficult to hear). Edit: and just after posting this, a couple of Herring Gulls flying over, with loud calls.
