Venezuelan government takeover of Hato Pinero

Agree. Chavez already said how much he admires Idi Amin and Mugabe. He gave Mugabe Venezuela's highest award and wants to do a Zim in Venezuela. Friends in country are really spooked. So sad. But are the environmental organizations going to sit and do nothing on this? Greenpeace? WWF? TNC? Bird...

Venezuelan government takeover of Hato Pinero

Well I guess I got to answer my own thread. I was just at Hato Pinero. First time I've returned to the country since birding there a few years back and since the ranch was taken over. Venezuela has really taken a dive since I used to travel there frequently so I was happy to see Hato Pinero...

    internal flights

Just to add to this I would say that Venezuela has become such a difficult place to travel right now that it would be better always to go with someone who knows their way around like a guide or a local company. It's not the same country as when I used to bird there and I would be scared to...

Venezuelan government takeover of Hato Pinero

I hear that Hato El Cedral is no longer worth visiting because the government has run it into the ground. A friend of mine there last year and encountered little interest in foreign tourists. Instead there was a large group of Venezuelan military invloved in a scheme for the indoctrination of...

    venezuela advice

Hi Mike My hot spot suggestion would be Yacambu national park. A place not too many people get. I've had some great birding there. There's a local birder near there name of Pepe Clavijo who can help you. He works exclusively with Chris Sharpe and the Birding Venezuela people. Sharpe has a handy...

    venezuela advice

Hi Mike Hiring a car in Venezuela? Good luck to you. The usual hire car firms are there but the cars are very expensive and in poor shape. I hired a couple of times and had numerous break-downs and they'll charge heavilly you for any little scratch. Regards, DT

    Neotropical rediscoveries

Theres a good feature that covers all the birds you mention in an issue of a magazine called NEOTROPICAL BIRDING . its called: Lost and found, a gap analysis for the neotropical avifauna. I just read a photocopy and it looks to have good photos. In the same issue is an feature about new species...

Hi there There is something about this in an old book I have called simply The Tanagers and published by Smithsonian Press. I don't know whether this agrees with the article or the Clements updates. Regards, DT

    Coopers Hawk? Juvenile? (Ohio)

From my limited experience of America, I would say it is a Coopers as it has a rounded tail and capped look. It isn't a juvenile though. Its more like a full adult. I am not an expert though. Regards, DT

Birding Trip Ruined By British Airways

British Airways have always been a third rate outfit and a discredit to Britain. After continual problems both on work and leisure trips our company finally stopped travelling with them after they charged us the cost of the ticket in overweight (over 500 quid) when they changed their luggage...
