    looking for owls and woodpeckers

Hi everyone I am hoping to come to Sumava next April (2015). I would welcome any further information beyond Den's excellent write up above. Also how extensive has the logging been in Sumava to deal with the bark beetle? I hope that there are still large parts of the forest worth visiting and...

Many thanks Francois. I'll give it a try if it's still around next week. If anyone else has any tips do please put a post up.

    Baikal Teal, Diksmuide, West Flanders

Hello to birders in Belgium I will be passing close to Diksmuide on Wednesday (9th April) and was wondering what the access arrangements are for the Baikal Teal site (that is of course if it is still there then - I will check Waarningen). I have found the Blankaart Waterproductie Centrum that...

    Birds around Nice/Cannes/Monaco area

Indian Silverbill is now common in Cannes. You can even see them in the trees outside McDonald's and the bar called the Grand Cafe opposite the main conference centre at the port. They are also easy to see up by the castle.

    Black-shouldered Kite, SW France

Thanks a lot. Really useful (and the WBW tip). We are staying in a gite near Arthez d'Asson south of Pau so hopefully we'll catch up with some good birds. Hopefully also Cat C Red-billed Leiothrix (although Black-shouldered Kite would thrill me much more despite having seen them before in...

    Calais Birding

Take a look on http://nordpasdecalais.observado.org/index.php for recent sightings. Not much on there when I just looked. The pools north of Honschoote (not far off your route) are excellent in spring but hunting may well have started. Platier d'Oye is always worth a look too - both from the...

    Pas-de-Calais

Apologies that this is far too late but in spring (late April/May) the area around Hondschoote (just into Nord department and south of Dunkerque and close to the Belgian border) is absolutely superb for waders, Garganey etc. However by late summer it is so extensively shot over that there are...

    Black-shouldered Kite, SW France

Hi everyone. Has anyone up to date information on Black-shouldered Kites in SW France? I believe the Adour valley is the place to go and I read there were as many as 120 pairs in 2012. I will be passing through the Dordogne/Landes area in a few weeks but am likely to be east of Aire sur...

    Montenegro - 18th September - 2nd October 2011

Another birder in Montenegro! I too was in Montenegro in October (17-28th). We had a great time and did lots of walks from a walking guide in German that I managed to find (available on amazon.de). Highlight was Rock Partridge in Orjen National Park near the Bosnian border (at the tree line)...
