Looks like it may have escaped a predator attack, perhaps?

Mustn't forget that these delightful looking birds are predatory too. Looks like this one got a bee.

Duck ID required - Red Lotus Lake, near Udonthani, Thailand

There were lots of these ducks, I think they are whistling ducks of some kind, but can't narrow it down, they took to the wing if we got too close, which showed the rather distinctive wing colouration off nicely... thanks for the help (in advance)

Naming problem. Some have a red vent, others have yellow rear-ends, but yes, let's ignore that and call them sooty-headed! Sounds like some people were a little embarrassed about naming this bird... Red-bottomed Bulbul or Yellow-bummed Bulbul anyone?

    Jump! Black Drongo

Why fly when you can jump? Sometimes you don't always pick up what birds do until you photograph them.

A remarkable photo for unobvious reasons

Spotted Dove. When the photo was taken the bird was in shadow. Remarkable how much data you can get back by recovering shadows. Did some colour noise reduction in Lightroom too.

As ever, the bane of a bird photographers life is the exciting bird that's too far away, but you have to shoot anyway, because you don't know when you'll see it next!

I didn't look for it, it came over to see what I was up to... same sort of curiosity as the European Robin!

Female Marsh Harrier gathering nesting material

There are a few breeding pairs of Marsh Harriers at RSPB Strumpshaw Fen, one thing they can be rightfully proud of. Trouble is it is the closest reserve to my home in Norwich, so this sight is very common to me. You get a bit blasé when you see them all the time, and then people come from a...

Functional imaging of the pigeon brain with implications for the evolution of avian flight

Very interesting. I have taken many photo's of birds taking flight, and on the whole if it is from a position above ground-level, they jump well before opening their wings. Not sure if this supports the gliding hypothesis or not. Just saying.
