    Oxfordshire birding

Great day's birding in Oxfordshire today, albeit a rather grey one! We decided to visit Sonning Eye GPs after some nice birds reported, and quite easily found both Smew (inc. one drake) and Bittern walking on the ice. On the way back to Oxford we drove through some of the back roads and...

    Canary Islands, Christmas 2011

Hi David, Nice trip report. We just spent a few days on Tenerife last week. I thought it would be just worth mentioning that Punta Teno was really good for us - two separate Barbary falcons, B's pipit, Rock sparrows were all stars. Wouldn't want people to feel discouraged from going, its a...

    White-eyed River-Martin

I too have been curious about this. I did a bit of a web and literature search but couldn't find anything more recent than what was previously discussed on this forum. From that, one could only assume that they haven't, in fact, been seen again. Very sad, such an interesting bird and story too.

    Great Tit Question

Yes - they will even mimic alarm calls of blue tits in order to 'scare' them off food sources.

    ID - Southern France

Well I definitely thought it was Whitethroaty, but the picture seems to be proving me wrong. It's perching on the fence having hoped out of the olive-tree to my squeeking, unlike the local redstarts that were perching there regularly.

    ID - Southern France

Photo taken in mid-August this year in the Cevennes (southern France). I've thought it was a Sylvia spp warbler from watching it, but the photo is making me wonder. It didn't act like a redstart (both Black and Common were present). Would be interested in hearing people's opinions! Thanks.

    Help with BOP identification

Black kites with moulting outer retrices can often have tails which look rounded, so don't discard it too quickly.

Go for Bintel. They are the best I've found in Australia.

SASOL books on birds of Southern Africa

Hey Foreyes. We have both versions, but took the smaller one with us which sufficed. However, I STRONGLY recommend that you invest in more than one guide. The recent Roberts is worthwhile, and if you have room, a version of Newmans will also be useful. We needed all three to work out some of...

    birds longevity

Most Australian species live for at least 10 years. Many, like fairy-wrens, thornbills, etc.. are 10-15 years. Many of the larger birds (Whistlers, honeyeaters, etc..) are likely to all be 15+ years. You should note, however, that this is quite high compared to most parts of the world, and...

Australian Ringneck a long way from home

Hi Dave, I've seen Superb parrots in Barcelona, so Australian parrots seem common in aviaries, even species that you'd be surprised to see!

Cormorants on Lake Neuchatel & Fishermen protest

I came across the following news story today: Fishermen against protected cormorants It made me wonder, as the fishermen speak of the threat to generations' worth of their profession, if the status of cormorants has changed? Are they becoming more numerous?
