Anyone tried bug larva bird food (Beetle Mania)?

I bought it to entice the bluebirds to the feeder. I haven't seen any bluebirds, but the cardinals and sparrows like it. However, the cowbirds and grackles have taken it over! |>:(|

    Hi - anyone in VA?

Hi - anyone in SE VA? I'm not really new to Birdforum, but I recently relocated to Virginia from Michigan. I have had feeders up for about 3 weeks, now, but I haven't seen much activity. I'll miss seeing "my" Northern Shrike, but maybe I'll see the Loggerhead. . . |8)|

    Leucistic house finch?

This bird showed up at my feeders last night. The very poor photos are taken from the window. Sorry, I haven't been able to catch him while I'm outside. He's eating black oil sunflower and niger seed. He looks larger than the goldfinch at the feeders, so I'm leaning toward house finch. His...

    Today at the feeder

The starling invastion has started They've tripled recently. |=(| I had three adults and three babies at the feeders this morning. I have to admit, though, it was kind of cute when all three babies were playing in the bird bath. |:d| Still no sign of the towhees.

    Today at the feeder

Fledglings As much as I have hated seeing the European Starling at my suet, today I was just as delighted. He/she brought a fledging to the tree above the feeders. It waited patiently while mom/pop grabbed a bite of suet and fed it to him/her. Now I just hope I don't get a whole flock of...

    Today at the feeder

In the last few years, though, I've had many pair scratching in the area behind the feeders. <shrug> Hopefully they're be back. . .

    Today at the feeder

Where are the Eastern Towhee?? Most of my usual summer feeder birds have returned: indigo buntings, Baltimore Orioles, ruby-throated hummingbirds, rose-breasted grosbeaks, chipping sparrows. The white-throated and white-crowned sparrows have passed through. I've even had some...

    Strange (?) crow behavior

Thanks, Shelley. That was very helpful! The web page has more than I ever wanted to know about crows. |:d|

    Strange (?) crow behavior

My mother has had a birdbath for decades. Last week when she looked at it, she said there was a small dead bird, small bones and other debris in it. She kept an eye out and discovered that a crow was depositing bones and other garbage in the birdbath. She asked me what to do. Other than...

    Baltimore Oriole

They are cool birds! The first oriole this year showed up yesterday several times to nibble on the suet. I hadn't put up the twisted brass oriole feeder that I got for Christmas. Now I can't find it!! I found the bird bath I also received, but I don't have a clue where the feeder is. :(...

    Today at the feeder

I thought I saw a female GB a few days ago, but she didn't have a very distinctive eyeline. Seeing the male today, though, probably confirms that they have been here a few days. They're heading your way, Tammie!

    Today at the feeder

A Banner Day The first of the season Rose-breasted Grosbeak showed up today! It's so nice having him back. More should be appearing soon. The second event doesn't really count as "at the feeder" except that I heard it as I was filling the feeder. :) I get to add an American Bittern to my...

    Today at the feeder

My goldfinch numbers are up again since my Northern Shrike headed further north. However, I saw a sharp-shinned hawk in the trees above the feeders a week ago. He didn't get dinner that day, but. . .

    Today at the feeder

Frozen Goldfinch The warming temperatures today uncovered under the feeder a goldfinch who looks like he got buried in one of the snow storms. He was upright; and when I totally unburied him, he had one foot cocked trying to stay warm. Poor guy. On a happier note, I have had a few more...
