Very busy at the bird feeder today!

I had a gathering of Cedar Waxwings at my makeshift water feature this weekend! (I’m In Oklahoma City) Looks like they are plotting something nefarious. And now they are back! Currently watching about 15 or 20 take turns getting a drink. Such striking birds!

    Which Hawk? Oklahoma City, USA

I had a small Hawk catch a house sparrow this morning in my front yard. I watched him eat his meal about 3 feet from my window for about 30 minutes. Fascinating! I’m thinking it’s a sharp-shinned because of the size. He was pretty small. Smaller than the blue jays that have been landing in my...

What did I just see? Bird of prey - Oklahoma City, USA

Makes a lot of sense to me and I don’t doubt it. I def think I’m a terrible judge of size. (Which explains why I mentioned both Northern Harrier and Merlin in my first post!) Sounds like an interesting book. I should probably find a beginners guide before one for advanced birding though...

What did I just see? Bird of prey - Oklahoma City, USA

Thank you! I’m thinking you are right that it’s Cooper’s Hawk. All I have to go on is my Sibley’s book (stolen from my parents) and pics on Google. I saw some pics that look very similar and with a wing span at 2 1/2 feet, that seems about right. I don’t think it was as small as Sharp-shinned...

What did I just see? Bird of prey - Oklahoma City, USA

I’ve been sitting here counting my birds for FeederWatch and a little flock of sparrows is foraging on the ground… nothing special. Suddenly, they fly to the tangled vines on my fence and bunch up in the center. A large gray and white bird swoops in, lands on a tree at the edge of my yard and by...

    Carolina Chickadee

Carolina Chickadee in flight. It had landed on my windowsill and I took this right after it flitted off again! There are a few house sparrows in the bushes in the background as well.

    Hello from Oklahoma!

Thank you….yes, I assumed I needed a variety of food. :) I have a pot bottom that I put fresh water in and they love to use it to bathe and drink from. I noticed there’s a forum for seed and feeders so I’ll check it out for more specifics on what I can do to attract more birds. Thanks for...

    Hello from Oklahoma!

Hello! I am excited to join the forum and learn more about birds. I’m a teacher and bird watching has become my relaxation when I’m stressed. I’m participating in Project FeederWatch for the first time this year and am really enjoying counting my birds out my front window. I have a nice little...
