    Who likes brown-headed cowbirds?

It is too bad the cowbirds spoil their reputation with their one obnoxious habit, because outside of their parasitic behavior they are quite the entertaining birds, especially during courtship. They have a lovely warbling song and do neat mating displays. I had two males competing over one...

    Chickadee Eating from Hummingbird Feeder?

I once saw a chickadee at the hummingbird feeder, hovering like the hummingbirds do at the feeding holes and attempting to put its beak in. But it couldn't maintain the hover more than a few seconds, and it didn't look as though its beak could fit in the hole. (At the time, the hummingbird...

Grouse or Quail - Portland, Oregon USA

This bird is much larger than a California Quail -- about the size of a large pigeon, almost the size of a small bantam chicken. So based on size, it seems like it can't be a quail or a bobwhite?

Grouse or Quail - Portland, Oregon USA

That does resemble this bird -- are Masked Bobwhite Quail the right size? These birds are much bigger than ordinary bobwhites or quail. They are about the size of large pigeons (except with shorter tails).

Grouse or Quail - Portland, Oregon USA

Three quail-like birds showed up at my feeder yesterday. Except they're too big to be quail -- they're about the size of pigeons. Someone suggested grouse. I can't find any quail OR grouse that match their coloring. (I'd say ptarmigan if they had any white on them at all.) I think they...

    Squirrels !

"I put peanuts down on the ground for the squirrels and other but all they do is collect them and burry them in the garden for later then come back and raid the feeders." If you crack the peanut shells, or better yet break the peanuts in half, they are worthless for burying. Plus, when you...

    Squirrels !

Other than, possibly, some expensive "squirrel-proof" feeders I have seen advertised, there is only one really effective way I have found to keep squirrels off bird feeders. That is to give them a feeder of their own, with food they like better. They like peanuts better than anything. If you...

    Backyard bird list

Here is a list of the birds who I have seen in my yard in SW Portland. Some of these are frequent visitors, some seasonal, some are rare visitors. BIRDS WHO COME TO OUR FEEDERS (27) Anna's Hummingbird Rufous Hummingbird Black-Capped Chickadee Chestnut-Backed Chickadee Mountain Chickadee...

    question about songbirds after dark

My hunch is that this songster is the common and unappreciated robin. Where I live, the notes are usually in groups of five, not three, but I'm sure it varies, it doesn't sound like a fixed phrase. The robins are the last ones to stop singing at night and the first ones to sing in the morning...

    Hello from Oregon

Hello from Portland, Oregon. I have counted 41 bird species who have visited my yard, of whom 27 species have come to my feeders at least once. That's really what matters in my intro, right?
