Some small additions to HBW Key

The death of Adriaan Provo Kluit occurred in June 1893. But it seems we do not get closer to Van der Henst

Some small additions to HBW Key

In VertNet we can see A. Provo Kluit indeed collected specimens in California in July-December 1870. No sign of Van der Henst or Drechsler in California though (in fact not at all in VertNet). One of Provo Kluit's Californian specimens is dealt with in Auk 47(3), p417: the apparently first North...

Some small additions to HBW Key

If this is the same Adrian Provo Kluit (and his name must be rare) than he stayed in California for considerable longer than 5 years and had something coming (and he may have wished he hadn't stayed that long). Note that he is named a collector on this website (albeit for Barnard & Co which...

    Ptilinopus mercierii

Most arrivals and departures to and from Hawaii in 19th century are available as scans here: https://digitalarchives.hawaii.gov/browse/parent/ark:70111/0jCq. Maybe his arrival can be tracked down as well?

    Loxops wolstenholmei Rothschild, 1893

In the archives of passenger lists from Hawaii, reference file MFL73-16, it can be seen on page 270 (out of 1141) that EB Wolstenholme indeed left Honolulu for Auckland on 25 August 1893 on the ship Monowar (that had as its final destination Sydney).

    Myadestes lanaiensis rutha

The key correctly names Ruth May Goss as the dedicatee in the scientific name of the sadly extinct Olomao from Molokai. She was the wife of the describer William Alanson Bryan. Details of her birth date are lacking. According to here, she was born in May 1874 and died on 5 February 1904. Perhaps...

    Acrocephalus familiaris kingi

While researching some scientific names of Hawaiian bird species, I came across the Nihoa Millerbird (Acrocephalus familiaris kingi). The key notes that it is dedicated to Capt. James King (1750-1784), explorer in the Pacific with Capt. Cook 1776-1779 (The Key to Scientific Names - Birds of the...

Binoculars confiscated by Egyptian authorities at airport

Good question! I think all brands that we use in birding will be considered professional (roof prism binoculars) whereas porro prism binoculars may be acceptable. But I did not ask why mine were considered such (as I considered it a compliment, trying to get something positive out of the...

Binoculars confiscated by Egyptian authorities at airport

I had a similar experience when entering Tunisia a month ago. My binoculars were 'professional' ones and got confiscated. They were returned when I left the country a week later. This happened at Enfidha Hammamet Airport, the airport near Sousse. The countries in North Africa may have similar...

Some small additions to HBW Key

When checking the newspapers on Gideon van der Henst who is eleve at the Leiden museum (as in here), he is associated with both G A Drechsler and Provo Kluit. On the List of Noord-Holland Landverhuizers 1870, as quoted by Bjorn, not only Van der Henst (albeit H J) and A Provo Kluit are on board...

As Laurent also says, his link refers to Pierre Jaunne Henri Pollen as the husband of Allegonda Petronella van Renesse. Here, the death is announced of the widow of P J H Pollen on 25 February 1905. In other newspapers she is announced as A P Pollen-van Renesse (e.g. here on 28 February 1905) in...
