    Fody on Reunion

See attached image of a fody, taken on Reunion in January 2019. I presume this is a Madagascar fody; but the neatly demarcated breast band and brown belly is not what I expect to see on a Madagascar fody. Can someone please help explain the plumage?

    Mauritius in may

I was there in January this year. Three main areas should provide a chance for all remaining endemics. 1. Black River Gorges NP accessed from Petrin. I followed the Macchabee and Colphanes Trails and had good luck with echo parakeet and Mauritius cuckooshrike. Also Mauritius bulbul, grey...

48 hours in Durban from 4 January 2019

Thanks for the information. I decided to stay close to the city and search out one of the large barn swallow roosts. Tried Mount Moreland this evening but it was not in large scale use. Where are the >1million swallows roosting if not there. Any advice welcome for tomorrow.

    Unprecedented wagtail roosts in Singapore

In the past month two wagtail roosts have been located in densely urbanised parts of Singapore. Initial accounts suggest that this behaviour has not been recorded in these locations before, and maybe never before in Singapore. The main species involved is grey wagtail. Numbers are in the low...

Little or least terns on rafts?

Can anyone here share information regarding the use, or non-use, of rafts by little or least terns for breeding? Other tern species will use rafts, but do little and least? Thanks. Richard

New Caledonia suggestions - February 2017

Back from a successful trip - all bar the thicketbird and did not go to Loyalty Islands. I rented a car and camped. Five full days of birding, mainly Park Riviere Bleu with stop at Mount Koghi and Parc des Grands Fougeres. Please feel free to send me a personal message if you have any questions.

New Caledonia suggestions - February 2017

I will have the chance of a short (4 or 5 days) layover in New Caledonia in February 2017 - my first visit. I would welcome advice on how best to manage the limited time I have to maximise birding options. Priorities would be to focus on endemic landbirds with kagu as the obvious #1 target...

    Common moorhen - Singapore

Hi, Several common moorhens have been seen at Kranji Marshes in Singapore recently. The species is not easy to find in Singapore, so they have attracted some local interest. One of the birds has an unusual colouration to the bill - see attached image - taken yesterday 3 April. I would be...

    Ascension frigatebird news

Another year and another season for the frigatebirds on the mainland of Ascensiion. The remarkable success story continues: https://www.facebook.com/AscensionIslandConservation/?fref=photo To summarise: After feral cats were introduced to the island, there were no mainland nesting attempts in...

Is avian taxonomy still dependent on ongoing specimen collection?

I am not fundamentally opposed to collecting or hunting. But to me there is something disingenuous about an article from the AMNH that promotes the re-discovery of this beautiful bird and shows images of a bright-eyed immaculate male, but does not even mention the fact that the bird was...

    Singapore escapee ID please

Hi. This black finch like bird has been puzzling observers in Singapore recently. It is not a local, and as an obvious escapee, where to start? I have not been to see the bird myself and am sharing images from those who have. Please respect that these are their images. The bird is reported to...
